Who cares! Sure, it is not exactly health food, but it is delicious. A staple in our house. Breakfast is bread with nutella for DS and DH. Which is actually a very typical breakfast in my home country.

I don't have any experience with the DALF because we're native speakers but I can share the French point of view on spelling if it helps. :001_smile:
It depends on what kind of spelling mistake you're talking about. If it is purely an orthographe issue (like a double consonant), it's not such a big problem - unless it is a very simple word that everyone is supposed to know. He should avoid very common spelling mistakes like ver/verre/vert of course.
But very often a spelling mistake will also be a grammatical error (in a verb, an adjective) and this gives a negative impression. (For instance, writing "je vais mangé" would be a problem: it shows that you don't master the futur proche or don't understand the difference between the participe passé and the infinitif.)
Punctuation mistakes are not serious mistakes in French - well, not as much as in English anyway.

My children are older (DD12 and DS9) but this is what we do:
Math: in English
Science: in English with additional readings in French
History and Geography: in French with additional readings in English
Language arts: English and French every day for DS; French and English on alternate days for DD.

Maria has done a tremendously fine job of teaching concepts incrementally, so that even a child who may not think she is good in math will understand numbers. I do have to agree with the smaller font size, insufficient white space, but I've made it work for us. I write for DD. It's one of the best purchases I've ever made - easy to accelerate several grades in one year yet containing clear instructions, sufficient problems for practice with a child who needs extra time thinking about certain concepts. Maria is very responsive to emails and her passion for getting kids/parents to understand math is evident. It's one of the most open and go math programs. You could go with SM, which I also use, and it does have large type, lots of space to write answers, but it also means you would have to deal with more books per year.

I asked dh, and he was stumped on these as he said they aren't (or at least, weren't, as they may be now) part of what was offered when he was in school.
However, he said if he had to tell his family about these activities (as if our kids were participating) he would use the following:
Club de jeunes ecrivains and club de debat (sorry, don't know my keyboard shortcuts for the accents).
He did say for the creative writing, there are a few options, but for a club that meets once a week or once a month, he would use the above (as none of them fit perfectly), and other alternatives would indicate a 'camp' (as in atelier d'ecriture), or readers discussing books (as in club de literature).
Good luck with this! It's tricky to describe something in a foreign language that isn't 'done' there. Dh has had this happen several times over the years.

A Numen is the ID number of a teacher in the French public school system. French editors won't give you access to the teacher's manual PDF (guide pedagogique) if you don't have a Numen.

Same for Germany.You mean diagramming in which you *draw* the relationship between the different parts of a sentence? No, noone has ever heard of it in the Netherlands.We do learn grammar (well, at least we used to learn grammar) and we do analyse sentences, but no diagramming!

One of my most memorable sites in all of Paris was a small cathedral called St. Chapelle. It would be quite easy to fit in on Monday or Tuesday of your schedule and would be well worth the extra hour of time. This is an exquisite place right in the heart of the city near where you will be already. You will find there colors in stained glass and ornately painted walls that are a feast for the eyes like no other cathedral in all of France. There is a great deal of history connected to St. Chapelle that you'll want to read up on ahead of time.

In Germany, there is no "algebra 1" - math is not compartmentalized in one year packages. Some parts of algebra 1 are taught in 6th grade (terms), linear equations in 7th, quadratics in 9th. Likewise, geometry is spread out - congruency theorems in triangles are in 6th, other stuff later.
This builds in a more continuous review.
I asked hubby (from Germany) and he doesn't know what I'm talking about. He said they just called everything math. He said is that with equations and stuff? I said yeah, I guess so. He said 5th grade. He said they never called any math class (except geometry) anything but math class.I went to school in France and :iagree:.

I am a neat/clean freak and can manage this without going nuts. We traveled for 5 summers all over the world with just large backpacks. After those travels, it taught me that clothes can be worn more than once.
