  1. I am looking into Lit Analysis recommendations for my dd who will be in 8th grade.  (5th child--have used SL for older 4, but am wanting more lit analysis that SL has as well as essay questions.)

This thread has been helpful. However, please help me with some abbreviations:

    What is LLfLOTR?

What is Jill Pike's program called?

    Thank you

  2. cbollin--Thank you so VERY much for sharing your experiences with MFW!  (I don't personally know anyone who is using it--probably because it wasn't out when I started homeschooling in 1995, and since what I started with for my first 3 kids worked, I didn't have to do an in-depth curriculum search until what I had been doing wasn't working for #4.)  So your insights arevery helpful!

Question (I may have more!):  How is the literature analysis in US I and II?  When given an essay to discuss a piece of literature, does the teacher's guide have content points to use to evaluate the content of the essay?  (I asked the same question regarding history on the other thread.)

Thank you for your time in sharing your wisdom!

  3. cbollin--Thank you for your informative reply.  I think that I will use US I then II as designed;~).

Do the guides have a list of content points that a good essay would have--for history and literature?  I am not as concerned about style and grammar guidance as I am about being sure that the child's essay actually contains the historical facts, etc. to answer the essay question.  (TOG history test answer key has points that a good essay would contain.)

  4. Would love to hear of others experiences as I am needing to use a different curriculum for my rising 11th grader.  (I used SL for my oldest 2: DS 2013 AF Academy grad., DS junior in college Civ Engineering major on scholarship.  I used a 3 years of TOG with SL reading followed by 1 yr. of SL for DD who is a senor.)  I have found the lack of writing instruction as well as the lack of guidance in grading the content of the writing assignments very frustrating.

My 4th child (DD) is a slow reader, so SL and TOG are both challenging due to the amount of reading.  I am wondering if MFW would be a better fit.  THOUGHTS?!

Also, could I do the 1st half of 11th followed by the 2nd half of 12th in order to get a full year of US History 11th grade?  Then in 12th I would do the 2nd half of 11th (government) and the 1st half of 12th (economics).  Thoughts and experience?

  5. I've been using Tindall's America: A Narrative History for my university class this spring. I plan on using it for my son in 11th grade next year. However, we are using 1 volume, not 2. Depends on what you mean by slow reader, my son is a slow reader and I plan on using the 1 volume spread over the year, my college level class uses the one volume in the semester, which is a much faster reading schedule.

IMO, I would focus on covering one CLEP for a slower reader, instead of trying to study for both. Also, check with colleges they might be considering. I'm considering having ds do the CLEP test, but one school he is considering does not grant credit for the US History test while another does. Acceptance will vary from school to school.

Here are some of resource college board recommends. http://clep.collegeboard.org/exam/history-us-i/resources

Elegantlion--Thank you for the text suggestion as well as the link to a study guide.  Is the book engaging for a high school student?--Did you find it to be more of a narrative or a textbook (like ABEKA)?

As far as covering only 1/2, I am really hoping to cover all of American history in order to give her a full credit for American history on her high school transcript.  Do you think she could earn a whole credit and only cover "half" of American history?

  6. I am trying to decide which American history curriculum to use for my DD (rising junior) who is a slow reader.  I would like her to be prepared to take the CLEP exams for US History I and II.

Thoughts about Notgrass Exploring America as preparation for the CLEP?

(My 3rd DD did well on the Western Civ I and the US History I using TOG, but my 4th child has not been able to keep up with the TOG or Sonlight readings like my older 3.  I have used a combination of ABeka (World History) and Sonlight (Story of the World) for 20th Century World history this year.  She enjoyed the SotW.  She reads the ABEKA text and answers the questions without difficulty, but she finds the ABeka quizzes and tests ask her too many details--and she doesn't like memorizing a bunch of facts.  I do wonder if because she is used to a curriculum with a bigger picture (TOG dialectic) and Sonlight, that the ABeka textbook with details is too great of a change in focus.)

I would greatly appreciate hearing of anyone's experience!

  7. Thank you, ChrissySC.  I am new to the forum and need to experiment with searching--so thanks for the tip!  I really appreciate you sharing your personal experience and description above.

BTW--For grammar, I use Shurley Grammar for 3 through 7 along with dictation exercises that correspond with their Sonlight literature.  From 7th through 12th I also use ABEKA as well as the Blue Book of Grammar at the beginning of the year in 10th and 11th (quick review before the PSAT.)  What do you use for grammar now instead of ABeka?

  8. So I have figured out WWS and HOB (and WWtB--ha, ha), but still have no idea what WWE is?

Also, would love to hear of others experience with WWtB as I am looking for a writing program for  rising 11th and 8th graders.  Thank you!

  9. I am new on the forum, and although I have been homeschooling 18 years and have heard of many different curriculum, I am finding that I do not recognize the abbreviations.  ** Please tell me what LToW, WWS2, and WW3 are.**

(I have successfully and happily used Sonlight and TOG for my 3 older children, but my 4th child (going into 11th grade) is a slow reader and does not like to read so I am looking for alternatives for her for American Literature and US History (as well as writing since she may not be using the assignment with the Sonlight and TOG I already own.)

    Thank you!!

  10. I am looking for recommendations for a US History curriculum for a slow reader who will be in 11th grade.  I would like the curriculum to prepare her take both the US History I and US History II CLEP exams.  (My 3 older children used Sonlight or TOG for history in high school, but my 4th child does not enjoy reading and is a slow reader.)

I have considered ABEKA US History, but not sure if (a.) it would be too dry after reading books instead of textbooks and (b.) if it would prepare her to take the CLEP tests.

    Would love to hear recommendations!

  11. Has anyone used Write with the Best and/or Read with the Best curriculum?

I have used Sonight with my 4 older children, but have a 10th grader who is a slow reader (and does not enjoy reading) as well as a weak (compared to her older sibs.) writer.  We have started practicing for the SAT 25 minute timed essays, and unlike her sibs who could recall examples from Sonlight literature and history readings to use in their SAT essays, she does not seem to have quick enough recall.  I am planning on having her study American Lit. next year, but am wondering if there is a curriculum that my daughter would glean more from.

(I have also had a somewhat of a love-hate relationship with Sonlight's writing assignments through the years.  Since I do not have time to read all of the literature myself, I have oftern felt ill-equipped to evaluate the content of the kids' writing assignments.)
