  1. Hi everyone, I am looking for a good program or workbooks that will help my 4th grader going into 5th grade with fractions and geometry.  I have checked Lakeshore Learning and the ABC toy zone stores, they are teacher resource stores, but found workbooks, but couldn't find anything that would explain how and why it's done that way.  We are doing Singapore 3B and 4A right now because they have fractions in them and a little bit of geometry but she is struggling with the geometry and putting the fracitons in order and I don't know how to teach her because I don't understand them as well..  I am looking for a program or educational books that would help both of us explain how and why and how to work out the problem step by step or something.  PLEASE HELP a stay at home mom that know nothing about MATH!!  thank you

  2. My Preschooler will be starting Kindergarten this year and we just started the All About Reading yesterday and I don't know what program i should use to help with math.  She loves to do Math and count, etc.  I didn't know if the Preschool math at home if anyone has used it yet or not?  They were talking about using the ten frame, but just using the 5 frame at first and then moving one.  any sugguestions would be great on where I should start?  My husband started with my daughter with singapore but she started when she was in 2nd grade i believe.  I am looking for something to help my preschooler/Kindergartener with a Math program that would include a workbook and a teachers guide, because I have no CLUE on how to teach!!  Thank you so much.

  3. Here is my dilema, My daughter will be 5, so she is suppose to start Kindergarten.  What are the guidelines for this by state of MN?  Do I have the right to hold her back?  I just don't think she is ready.   Do I have to prove my theory to the principal of her school?  I would like for her to start Kindergarten next year and not this year.  I don't know if I should wait or put her in school this year?  I know she will be the oldest in her class and maybe the tallest.  I would like your opinion please

  4. My DD in 4th grade just got accepted in the Young Scholarship Program.  She took her MAP math test and went down from last year.  The RIT scores were up from last year, but are in green where as to last year they were in blue.  So I am confused on how this test actually works.  Her percentile is 79% and in 3rd grade it was 87% percentile. Then her RIT scores were 212 and last year it was 202.  I emailed the teacher and she said not to worry and my DD is doing just fine.  She is in the young scholarship program.  We are now working on the MCA for this spring.  My daughter doesn't do very well on test.  She gets anxiety,, her brain goes blank, but at home she knows the material very well.

  5. I am needing some help understanding all fractions, so I can help my daughter learn.  I have tried Khan Academy, youtube, etc.  We are now working on Singapore, but I still don't understand it and need a book to help me understand it so I can teach my 9 daughter who is going into 4th grade.  Any suggestions would be great?  I also bought the book Elementary and Middle School mathematics and don't understand what they are saying.  Sorry, math is not my subject.

  6. So my DD she is going into 4th grade, we have took all the advice from here and we are doing Beast Academy, laungauge books, AAS, etc.  We do everything at home, but on her MCA test she did really bad.  I just feel like giving up and just don't know what else I can do to help her.   She does very well and understands the stuff at home, but doesn't apply it to school on these tests.  PLEASE any advice on what I can do would be great.  We have also just added the Kumon for Math as well.

  7. This is what I did, but they were a close friends of ours.  I made a rule that we won't talk about our kids education anymore because it just brings hurtful things to one another.  So far it has been working out great.  Sometimes she will slip, but I quickly change the subject.  Our friend will try to bring it up and I will have to remind her that we are not going to talk about our kids education jokingly.  I hope this helps.

  8. Okay, my daughter just got her test results back and they say 109 Standard Age Score, 71 Age Percentile Rank, and then 185 Universal Scale Score.  My goal is to get her into the Young Scholarship program and then the GT program.  She is 8 and is in 3rd grade.  Is her scores bad?  Also, what do you have to have (score wise) to get into the GT program.

    Thank you!

  9. Angela over at Satori Smiles wrote a good post about the whole MCT Island level curriculum and how the components fit together.  She then wrote the detailed schedule that Crimson Wife linked above.

    Wendy

yes, I printed that out, but on the good post I say a page 147 and I don't have that page.  What book is that in?  The Sentence Island or Grammer Island?  That was very, very helpful.

  10. Thank you for being so understanding.  I feel like I am the only one that doesn't understand.  Grammer is not my best subject, but I am learning too with my 3rd grader.  LOL.  By now, I should know english grammer, I am just trying to really understand it before I can teach my daughter.

That is awesome Nurse Bee that they are using it in the school.  My daughter's school isn't the best and I feel like I need to do more at home.

  11. No, Grammar Island teaches parts of speech and parts of a sentence: how to take an *already-written* sentence and point out which are the nouns, which are the conjunctions, etc.; what part constitutes the subject and what part is the predicate, and so on. Then Practice Island *practices* that skill by giving you *already-written* sentences and asking that you analyze them for the grammar.

Sentence Island is the composition/writing book for this level.

Do you have the books already? If you open them up you'll see a bit more what they entail.

Yes, I have the sentence island, grammer island, the reading books, and building language books, but they all say teacher manual on them.

  12. HI,

I have been working with my daughter which she is in 3rd grade, working on grammer and writing.  We have the FLL and Writing with Ease books, and Grammer island, but I get to a point that okay, now we have to learn that, and I just so overwhelmed on where to start?  So much to learn and don't know where to start her.  I give examples and then I am like okay, what we haven't learned that yet.  ERRRRRRR  Please HELP!  My self I am not good at english grammer, as you can see in my writing.  LOL!

  13. So the teacher talked to the teacher that has the Young scholarship program and GT program and they say that she doesn't show interest and is not eager to learn and shies away from challenge things.  How do I get my daughter to be more eagerness to do studing.  I just think if she gets into the GT program it will hep her so much in the future (high school and middle school)  In the program they challenge the kids so much and in the classroom she is not being challenge enough.  The math she gets is like doing 1st grade stuff for her.  So frustrated.  I am wondering what her scores need to be to get into the GT program or Young Scholership program.  They won't tell (the school)

  14. So my daughter scored a 202 on her MAP reading score, is this good?  We are trying to get my 3rd grader in a Young Scholarship program but it seems like her scores are just not enough to get into the program.  What to do?  In her 3rd grade class it just doesn't seem like they are challenging her enough like I do at home.  I have a friend who's girl is in the program and they get homework sent home everyday and they challenge her all the time in class with mind thinking etc.  It's just so hard!
