He did well with Lial's algebra last year (and in fact preferred it over Jacobs' algebra book), as he is a just-the-facts-ma'am kind of kid. But I think that I will have him look over both texts and see which one he thinks is a better fit. We lost about a month last year trying to make our first selection work, and finally made the switch, to the relief and satisfaction of us both!

Jann, do you use Lial for geometry too? I have both Jacobs and Lial's "Essentials of Geometry for College Students" and I'm trying to decide between them for a pretty math-savvy 9th grader. Any impressions you have would be welcome!

Yes, thank you Nick for your response! We've been using Latin I and we love it -- looking forward very much to trying out the Spanish! I guess that we will need the CDs; I studied some Spanish back in school but am nothing like a native speaker, so as you say, my reading the audio portions aloud would very much defeat the purpose of the listening component. Thanks again!

I've assumed all along that the Galore Park Spanish is more "Spain" Spanish than Latin American Spanish. Do the CDs use native speakers, or will dc puzzle their Mexican-American friends by speaking Spanish-from-Spain-by-way-of-Britain? :)

Do they have information on them that isn't included in the student's or teacher's books? Do they provide "dialogue" practice, or do they just provide assistance in pronunciation? I'd really rather not have to fork out the extra dinero, so to speak, but I will if they are integral to the course.

Dh, especially, knows all kinds of people. He knew Saul Bellow pretty well, and appraised his private library for him when he (Mr. Bellow) was preparing to move from Chicago to Vermont. He knows Roger Ebert. He knew Bill Veeck (former owner of the White Sox).
We sold an antique spinning wheel that used to sit in front of our fireplace to Amy Madigan and Ed Harris.
We know many people that are famous in their academic or political fields and are often interviewed on Discovery Channel documentaries or news analysis shows. Egyptologists, paleontologists, foreign policy guys, etc. I used to correspond regularly with former CNN and ABC anchor Aaron Brown.
Our bookstore has been used in film and television because it's so "quaint and picturesque." Our shop is to be seen, very fleetingly, in a scene in the film "Love Jones," for example.
And back when I was a young lass, I knew many major league baseball players, some of whom are now Hall of Famers, like Carlton Fisk. But my favorite was my high school coach, Al Pilarcik, who had played for the Orioles during his MLB career.

The 2005 version is probably just a newer edition of the 2002 one. Either one should give your dh a good start, and a good idea if this method is to his liking.

You can get a cheap mini version at Barnes & Noble for about $20 to see if you'd like it. But the full course is much more expensive -- and much more comprehensive. There are three levels for Spanish (I, II, and III) which are about $300 each. You might also want to check out your local library, as they often carry Pimsleur courses.

It's a legit honor society, with high standards of acceptance/admittance. Dd was inducted a couple of years ago, and I think it really did help with her college applications being taken seriously. On her transcript we noted that she was an inducted member of the society, and briefly listed the criteria required for membership.
Students aren't accepted "at large;" they have to belong to a local chapter. So if there isn't one near you, you'll have to obtain permission to start a chapter. Ours is very small and covers a wide geographical area, so we don't participate in activities together, but some chapters are quite active.
