  1. When I switch to Flash under the streaming options, the quality is slightly better, enough that I can use full screen with some programs. You can find the streaming options to the lower left of the small video window

But yeah, pixellation and poor resolution are the reasons I won't buy a Basic or Plus subscription, even with the HSBC discount. We subscribed to OnlineG3 instead, for both BrainPop and DE access. The DE product available through G3 is different from Basic or Plus. For example, it lacks Magic School Bus, but does have Planet Earth.

You can view Magic School Bus videos with the G3 subscription if you follow the links here: http://satorismiles.com/resources/discovery-education-streaming/magic-school-bus/ :)

  2. I'm using it in Firefox and google chrome (on a mac). ALL video's are very poor. Animal ones, etc. So poor, in fact, that sometimes you can't make out exactly what animal you are viewing. I'm viewing it on a small screen too...it's much too poor to make bigger.

Ditto. We also watch the videos on my Macbook Pro and they are grainy. Some aren't too bad (Planet Earth) and others are terrible. The really awful ones are old and I realize that has an effect on the quality. We also have a fast internet connection and turn off all other wireless devices in the house when we watch streaming content. It doesn't make a difference. :glare: My kids don't seem to mind so we just deal with it.

We have the G3 subscription and are able to download the videos.

  3. Hello everyone,

Can you tell me what you consider to be *essential* and non-negotiable for language arts at the 4th grade level?

And, if you don't mind, will you list whatever resources you use for each essential item??

    THANKS!! :)

Thanks for asking this! I always wonder if we are doing enough (or too much).

    We're using:

Writing - Writing Tales, Level 1 (we have used WWE 1, 2 & 3 but wanted to try something different)

    Grammar - FLL4

Readers - as assigned in our history curriculum (Guest Hollow American History, Year 1) and others listed in Sonlight Core D

Spelling - Natural Speller and Spelling City

I would also like to add reading comprehension. We use Spectrum books every now and then as well as printables from Evan Moor's Teach File Box. I often wonder if we should vocabulary.

  4. That was me that mentioned Magic School Bus. I was only going off of the list that Tammy had posted....here. It shows a bunch of MSB videos. But...I guess I am still unclear if this subscription really does included the Basic version or something different. I haven't gotten it yet to investigate what is or isn't on it. Did you find them on your DE yet?

I was able to find them through Satori's blog (thanks again!!). I was also able to view Planet Earth videos which are supposedly only available with DE Plus.

  5. Has everyone who signed up gotten their access to the Discovery Education already? When I signed up, I got the username/password for BrainPop but a note that DE would have to create a separate one for me and send it separately. I haven't gotten that yet. It's been 24 hours. Just wondered if anyone else had the same situation.

I didn't get a notification, but I logged in using my email address and the BrainPOP pasword and that worked. I signed up last night and was able to log in this morning.

  6. I just purchased this through G3 (thank you for sharing!!) and am confused about DE. I realize it is just the virtual streaming, but I can't find Magic School Bus videos that were mentioned. Are we limited to the Student Center?

  7. I would definitely say it can be stand-alone if you just want to add math and LA. There are a lot of activity and resource suggestions. If you do all of the suggestions and read all of the books you will have a very full schedule that includes geography, history, science, literature, etc. I am teaching it at our homeschool co-op and barely scratching the surface. I like it so much that we are going to use it as the backbone of our studies at home next year with my children (young K, 2nd, & 4th).

I have the pre-CD edition, but I did download the activity ebook which has the same content as the CD.

  8. We're doing Alpha, but we moved past counting from 0-9 once dd could count that high. Lesson 3 in Alpha is memorizing the colors of the blocks so we're waiting until she recognizes the 9 block (and all the others) before moving on. I'm not sure if it's the same in Primer, but if so I would move on to the next concept.

I think I recall Steve saying that mastery is when the child can teach the lesson back to you.

    HTH!
