A couple of years back I pasted the Nobel winners list from the BaW site, and have been keeping track, though I haven't had any super-firm goals.  I read 6 in 2017,  9 in 2018 and 9 last year, and I'd read a few authors before that too.

Probably my favorites are: Pavilion of Women by Pearl S. Buck, Kristin Lavransdatter by Sigrid Undset, Secondhand Time by Svetlana Alexievich (I'd strongly suggest the audio for this one), Beloved by Toni Morrison, My Name is Red by Orhan Pamuk (probably not for everyone but I really liked it), The Feast of the Goat by Vargas Llosa, Of Mice & Men and Grapes of Wrath by Steinbeck  ... I liked most of the rest I read as well, the only exceptions were:

Hated: As I Lay Dying by Faulkner (but I'm game to try another; I liked the writing, it was the plot and characters I hated), and Hunger Angel by Herta Müller (think I'm done with her).

Disgrace by Coetzee that I just finished was by a NP winner.  My next will probably be Drive Your Plow Over the Bones of the Dead by Olga Tokarczuk, which I'm really looking forward to.  I read her Flights last year, which was good, but I think I'll like this new one even more.

Thank you SO much for the suggestions! Definitely adding to my list! 🙂 I appreciate you sharing!

  2. So I finally narrowed down my ten categories based on some given and on some I had wanted to do before joining up so hope that's okay. Looking forward to the challenges this year as well! First book up is a new to me author, Sarah McCoy who wrote Marilla of Green Gables. Grew up loving the Anne series so thought I'd check this book out and see the author's take on it.

    Happy Reading Everyone!

Great American Road Trip (American Classics)
    Brit Tripping (British Classics)
    Around the World (World Classics)
    It's All About Me (Biographies)
    Nothing But The Truth (Non-Fiction)
    Nobel Prizer Winners
It's A Mystery To Me (Mysteries)
Something New (New Authors To Me)
How Did I Miss These? (High School Reads I Never Read/Finished)

Welcome back to the board and congratulations to your son!  Glad you are joining in!  What are you studying?

Thank you so much, Robin! I am excited to be here to read, and it's exciting to have him graduated, working, and doing well!

I am actually getting a masters degree in seminary in Family Ministry and Discipleship - Now that my son is graduated I have become a full time children's director at our church. 🙂 My background, however, was Elementary Education, but I always used that degree on my son. 🙂

This is a great time to join BaW! I joined when my kids went off to college -  I never would have had the time to read all this when I was still homeschooling (and huge props to those who do manage it...) this has been a great way to keep my brain engaged and also keep in touch with this wonderful community.

If you join in, you will never have to worry about figuring out what to read.  That used to be a big problem for me, as I don't tend toward the 'popular' books.  Now my to-read list is over 1600 books...    Goodreads is a great way to keep track of all that... before I'd make lists and lose them....

Thanks so much! And I totally agree with you - I couldn't have done this like I want while homeschooling! Can't wait to add to my reading list! 🙂

  5. Hi Everyone!

Just joined the boards - well, actually I just re-signed up and returned to the boards! Have always loved these forums. I homeschooled our son from K - 12th and a year ago he graduated college. I've decided to jump in and catch up on some much needed reading! So I'm looking forward to being a part and reading my 52 books this year. (Hoping I can manage the full 52 being in school again myself. LOL)

Now to figure out what I'm going to read!

    Thanks for having me!

  6. I am hoping someone here might be able to help me out b/c I am completely frustrated.

My 10th grader and I are suppose to be doing World Literature this year. I have been able to piece meal some stuff together, but am not totally happy with what I have.

I have looked everywhere for the type of textbook/study I am wanting and cannot find it or rather it is out of date. I am wanting a world literature approach that actually teaches literature from around the world. Everything I see seems to focus primarily on British lit! Argh! I want to start with the Bible, then move to Egypt, then Greece, then Rome etc.

All that to say, I have a wonderful reading list of books so that is not my problem. Having some teacher notes to explain, discuss and help me to pull things out of the literature is the problem.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

  7. I decide as I go. My moods change as to the type of books I feel like reading & the amount of time I have varies too. I always keep a running list of books I'd like to read, though, & will refer to that if I don't have something on hand that I want to read....

Through paperbackswap this year, I've accumulated quite a few books. I may make it my goal to read at least 75% of the books on my shelf before I get to go check out more from the library. :tongue_smilie::lol:

I've started a list of what I'd like to read. Everytime I see a recommendation here or get one from family/friends I add it to the list. I add all different genres so I can always find something that fits my mood:)

Great Ideas! Thanks for sharing! I think I will do a bit of both! :)
