I'm wanting to try SOTW this fall, but am unsure of where to start. We have upcoming 2nd, 4th and 7th graders. I was planning on putting everyone in year 3, with the 7th grader having lots of extra reading, but now I'm doubting that decision. This year we've been doing HOD Beyond with the 7 & 8 year olds and HOD Resurrection to Reformation for my 12 year old. If we do year 3 SOTW it will keep my daughter in the history cycle, but my younger two have not have ancients or medieval. Is that a big deal to just throw them in SOTW 3? Also, the 2nd grader is technically a year younger than the suggested age for SOTW 3. Anyone who has used this guide... opinions on if that should be a concern? Any suggestions appreciated! :)

This was a nice post to run across today. We are currently shopping for a new home closer to my dh's work. Our current 2200 sq ft home is under contract and we are downsizing to get our finances under control. We've had a hard time finding anything because we're comparing to what we're used to. I'm glad to hear some ideas from all of you and it gives me hope that we'll be fine! :) I'm kind of excited about making it work even. We're also trying to get on the Dave Ramsey bandwagon!

We are going to be just on unit 13 of beyond when we break for summer. We just plan to pick up where we left off when we begin again in the fall. We'll begin the Bigger guide after Christmas. It really works any way you do it! :)

My dd does not use them and we're about halfway thru the epsilon book. She did at first, but mostly just because I got them out and had her do it with them, but now she says she prefers not to use them at all.
So, it's definitely possible to do it without. Probably just depends on the kiddo.

I'm currently using Beyond with my two boys ages 6 and 8. My 6yo doesn't do as much writing as the 8yo, they use separate spelling lists, and the younger is just farther behind in the emerging readers. It's wonderful how easy it is to fit both of them! We'll be moving on to Bigger after Christmas this year when they are 7 and almost 9.
I think it should be great for you, too!

I've printed the week long samples of both and still have a hard time deciding. :001_huh: I'm probably just overthinking it at this point. Thanks for trying to help! Are you using HOD right now?

The dictation is for spelling and each guide has an appendix with a couple levels to choose from, so if she needs to start back a level it's not a really big deal. (Or if she needs you to break it down into phrases, you can gradually work up to whole sentences, etc.)
Narration - if you read her an Aesop's fable or some other short story and asked her to do a written narration could she sit down and whip it out without struggle? Or does she complain that she doesn't know where to start? how to do it? or even complain that it's too much writing after a couple sentences?
Okay, so the dictation doesn't sound like it would be a big deal.
As for narration, well, it depends on what we read. Sometimes she has a harder time than others. She wouldn't complain about it being too much to write, but she may have trouble with where to begin. Usually I can just ask her a couple questions to get her started and she is fine.

Just looking for advice from any HOD users... we will be using this for the first time with our dd11 for 6th grade. This year we tried MFW ECC and that was pretty easy for her and she was quite bored with the science b/c she knew most the info already. She loves to read and is decent writer but we have not done much narration or dictation. The placement chart puts her at RTR with the exception of that. I don't want to bore her another year but I don't want to overwhelm her either. It's just so hard to choose without getting my hands on it. Any advice?

I preferred the guide and worksheets. I have Unit 1 for sale over on the sale/swap board if you're interested! :)

That's awesome! So glad you're feeling refreshed. It's easy to get discouraged, and with only three at home with me, I can only imagine your frustrations with 7! Good Job!!!

Yes, Explode the Code should be great for what your're needing. I used it with my older son after using 100 EZ lessons and then with my younger son now, to enforce what we're doing with Happy Phonics. You can check out some samples on Rainbow Resource, I think.

I've not had any trouble, they seem to ship pretty quickly. Must just depend on the items in stock maybe? Usually we get stuff within a week or so.

That's cool! Thanks! :)

When my dd used TT, she used it a year ahead.

We also use a white board, but it's a medium sized one that we can transport as needed. Works well for us. Most times we use the smaller hand held ones though.

Base ten blocks are a favorite around here. We also have played a lot of games with regular old dice.

This post is helpful. I borrowed FLL 1 & 2 from a friend and am trying to decide it it's for us. I can see how it could work wonderfully, but wonder if my boys would tire of it...

I would try to check out some used curriculum sales in your area so that you can get your hands on the material. That helps tremendously!
I use Rainbow Resource and Christian Book Distributors both regularly. I'm always checking ebay for items I need b/c you can sometimes get a super deal on curricula there.
HTH!

Agreeing with the others. I mark wrong and she corrects, but we do not keep "grades" on daily work. We do grade her math tests, but she still corrects them for practice.

I have found when my 6yr old reads words in a list, even words he knows, he misses them. But when he sees them in a story, he hits them every time. 5 is young so I would not worry about it. Just keep working on a few at a time.
:iagree:

I always feel bad about it, but I just cannot help it! If it doesn't work, then it doesn't work! :)

My ds did not like repeating the same books so many times in a row either. We usually only read it a couple times. I wasn't good at the planning either, so it didn't work out for us.

We finished Essentials B before Christmas and began 1A after. We're doing fine with that and do not feel like they were too much of the same. 1A plugs in more numbers whereas EB focused a lot more on pictures of objects. However, EB is very easy so depending on your childs needs, you may be able to skip it.
Help me decide on history!

I suppose not, but I just imagine we will get to more of the activities done if they are all learning the same thing. And for my own sanity in planning, I'd rather be only looking at one guide! :)
