  1.

My son (the one who uses LoF as his main math) used to freak out if there wasn't white space on his paper.  He tried MM and Singapore and he would literally start crying during math time.  He would also write the answers under the wrong problems without realizing, which makes me think the visuals are just too distracting.  Have you tried putting the problems on a dry erase board?  I think that's why my son likes LoF so much.  We work the problems on a dry erase board.  Also, he prefers 5 really difficult problems to 300 repetitive problems (his older sister is like that, too).  Mine don't like repetition for some reason.

Yes we like doing problems on the white board, or I have him spread them out on notebook paper.

  2. I would argue that 24 history sentences is not enough bones, and in order to keep up the pace, important periods in history have to be skipped. SOTW has 42 chapters and we'd have to read several per week to keep up with that pace (as it is, we can barely get through one chapter a week, supplementing it with the complementary materials). And the science jumps all over the place, so I wouldn't find continuity with that either.

Then again, maybe it could work well for those who don't put the same emphasis on history that our family does. I'll blame SWB for that ;)

You should not assume since we use the history sentences as our starting point, that we do not have a strong emphasis on history.  We do not skip important periods of history.  We take our time, it is not a race.  We make the program work for us.  No two families in our community do things at home in the same way.

  3. I'm sorry you did not have a good experience in your community.

I would like to address the "memorizing out of context" issue.  The way we approach our CC memory work at home is to dig into the history sentence and science each week.  CC provides us with the "bones" and then we put the "meat" on that skeleton throughout the year.  We can do as much or as little as we want for each subject.

  4. Thank you and you're welcome, absolutely they need to respond. But I do not force my children to hug or say I love you to anyone.  It needs to be their idea.  I have nieces and nephews that need to "make the rounds" before leaving a family gathering.  These kids are just doing it to please their parents, there is no emotion in their hugs at all.  It feels cold and forced.  I actually think it is quite sad they are made to do this.
