  1. Happycc,

Thanks for sharing your experience with this curriculum. It does sound like what I am needing. I really like Truthquest but I just can't keep up with going to the library to get the books I need. We live in a rural area and only go to town a few days a week and I seem to always forget and then I am scrambling to come up with something for history or we just skip it until the next time I go to town and that isn't good for keeping on schedule. I appreciate you taking the time to share !

  2. I am thinking about switching our history curriculum to America's Story. Last year, we completed Truthquest I -AHYS and started on AHYS II this year. But getting the books from the library is getting to be too much... Will we be ok starting with the Vol. 2 of America's Story or are they are some things that continue on from Vol. 1 such as timelines, etc. ? I have a 2nd and 4th grader. Thanks so much for any information !

  3. What about going literature based, like Five In a Row? You could spend 1 day on a theme, instead of a week..

    -------------------------------------------------------------------

At our current co-op, we base what we do each week on a FIAR (Five in a Row) book. We aren't there for 7 hours but it could easily be expanded just by doing more of the different subjects with FIAR. Here is how we have done it in the past: whoever is teaching that week starts out by reading the book, then the teacher had two lessons(approx. 30 min) to go with each book; one was more along the lines of the LA aspect and the second was teacher's choice of science, social studies, etc.(this is the part where you could expand to do more of the subjects) Then we also had a craft time, snack time, and games/activity time (all based on the book). Of course, you need to have some time to go to the playground, if possible and we had a seperate PE class which was not related to the lesson. Now, we are smaller in number but one year we had enough of 3 and 4 year olds, we even did a seperate class for them based on a BFIAR book.

The bulk of your planning will go into the crafts, snacks and games/activities because most of the rest can come right from ideas in the FIAR manual..

I hope these ideas help !:001_smile:

  4. I think the whole bee thing is delightful. And thanks to everyone's suggestions, now I am not a visitor anymore ! Yeah !!:hurray:

You just get addicted to the boards and don't even worry about your designation. I've been on here less time than some in terms of years, but obviously I spend a lot of time chatting rather than doing my work :).

The whole bee thing came up on the old boards- before these boards were set up- and it became a bit of an in joke and all these references were made to the hive mind. Ask a question and the hive answers it (I think of the Borg, personally). So when these boards were created, SWB with her wonderful sense of humour, created the whole bee thing.

  5. I just recently heard about MM (Math Mammoth). I love Singapore but I think it needs more practice at the level my kiddos are at (DS- blew through EarlyBird this year and has started 1A, DD- started 2A at the beginning of the year and is still there, we rested awhile on subtraction and division with carrying because it took her awhile where I felt like she got it ). So I have been going online and searching for worksheets for extra practice.

Would MM meet my needs for additional practice or do I just need to look into some of the additional practice books that Singapore puts out? Thanks !:001_unsure:

  6. I am new to the forum and just wanted to introduce myself. We currently live in the country in the middle of nowhere SW of Muskogee. At least, that is how my city friends describe it to me when they talk about where I live..... they also mention the word boondocks...

But we love it and don't ever want to live in town ever again...

Anyhow, this is my 3rd year of homeschooling, although before kids, I was secondary science teacher in the public schools.. This is the first year I have really felt like I have settled in my groove. Overall, I have found curriculum that seems to work for us and that I enjoy teaching. My DD got to be the guinea pig and her younger brother is reaping the benefits. The best thing for me is being able to teach my kids the way I wished I had been taught. It gladdens my heart to see how much my kiddos love books and that we are able to use that love in our schooling. I loved books as a kid but reading books was something done mostly outside of school... Hooray for living books !

I look forward to talking with some of the other Okies on here...

    Take care !

  7. I realized this is a bit of an old thead but I figured I would respond since I am new to the forum. I live in the Muskogee area but I realized our kids attend dance at the same dance studio in Tahlequah. I drive nearly an hour to get there but Ms. Kim is so awesome; my kids just love her. I noticed your DS was taking the Irish dancing. My DS, 5, has wanted to take the Irish dancing class since seeing it at last year's recital (sister was dancing in that recital) but I told him he had to take a year of Pre-Ballet/Tap first (plus I figured he needed to be a little older), so he is taking that along with big sister taking Ballet/Tap. But this Fall, he will definitely be signed up for the Irish dance...

I hope you were able to find a homeschool group in the Tahlequah area. If you weren't, PM me and I can help you with that. The homeschool co-op we are a part of currently meets in Muskogee but it used to meet closer to Tahlequah and I think some of Tahlequah area memebers who didn't want to make the drive to Muskogee are meeting in Tahlequah but you might have already found those ladies by now. Nice to meet you !:)

  8. I am considering this next year for my 3rd and 1st grader. Those of you who have used it, what do you think? Mama knows NO latin, so she will be learning along with the kiddos if that makes a difference... The goal is to gently introduce them to it for a year and then start something a little more rigorous the next year... the younger one catches onto to things fairly quickly, so the point is to have it where I teach them together (one less subject to have to teach seperately ;)) . Thanks !

  9. Hi everyone,

I am new to this forum and I was wondering if any of you could help with some advice.

This is my first year using LLATL with my 2nd grader and I have really found it is a good fit for us. However, I felt like 5 spelling words a week wasn't enough, so I have been supplementing it with Spelling by Sound & Structure -Grade 2 (Rod and Staff). The SBSS seems to be working well and she aces almost every test but I wonder if she is learning why these words are spelled that way...she doesn't seemt to really spend much time on the lessons (15 minutes or so to do Part A one day, 15 minutes on Part B another day and the spelling test another day)

Or am I just stressing about something I don't really need to stress about :001_huh:

I am working on my curriculum list for next school year and of course, that is where you start looking at the other programs and they all sound so good...but I have liked SBSS because it doesn't take tons of time and she can do it on her own and it requires no time out of me except to give the spelling test....but is there something better in the long run.

I am considering All about Spelling, but it seems more time intensive to me and much more pricey. But I am willing to do it if it is worth it. And would I need to start from the beginning of AAS and then work her through it more quickly than you would a 1st grader? (Which would not be a problem since her brother will be starting 1st grade next year and I would just use it for his spelling program).

    Thanks in advance.
