  1. Text Book for Standards Edition is very different and intensive compared to U.S Edition. TB has methods to teach new concepts, exercises for each topic (like workbook) and practice pages for each topic.

We teach our son the concepts from the HIG and then we move to corresponding pages in the text book. If text book pages requires writing then our son uses a note book. Then he moves into WB pages and completes them. At the end of each week, he takes a test from the test book.

    Hope this helps.

  2. Well, I figured out that within Skedtrack, one can export a Course Activites file and make it available to friends or to the world. So, if one wants to use one of these files, you would go to the menu options Courses -> Import -> From World (left side tab). You can then sort files I've created by clicking on the Auth ID column and going to Auth ID 14057.

Creating these files is rather tedious, so I don't know why in the world people wouldn't be utilizing this resource more! I only have a couple of files there now from 1st grade (they may be incomplete as I copied them partially for 2nd grade). I'll try to make some other ones for common curriculum that may be useful to some available. You can always edit them in the Activities -> Edit Activities screen but at least you're not starting from scratch. Hope it helps.

    Thank you.

  3. We have used both RS and SM. RS is a scripted program with less workbook based practices. RS uses lots of manipulatives to teach the Math using scripts written for the Parents.

I prefer/recommend RightStart A and/or B for younger kids with no previous math exposures. It would provide them strong fundamentals. For our son, it used to take 45 minutes to teach a lesson. Later we moved to Singapore for more abstract & workbook based approach.

Edit: RS does not require the parent to have strong math knowledge. Singapore w/o HIG would require some math knowledge to teach.

  4. Here is our plan for our second grader DS:

MATH - Singapore 2A/2B, IP, CWP, MEP, RightStart C (Selected Chapters), May be MM 2.

Reading - OPGTR (Continue), ETC 7-8 and lots of library books

Writing - WWE 1 (Not done yet)

Grammar - FLL 1/2 (Not done with 1 yet), GWG (Going to try this)

    Spelling - AAS Level 3.

Vocabulary - Wordy Wise 1 and 2 (Starting this year)

Critical Thinking - Building Thinking Skills, Mind Benders, Mathematical Reasoning, Language Smarts and others.

Science - R.E.A.L Science Odyssey LIFE (We did not make any progress on this last year)

  5. Wow, look like most of you are using MM. We are going to try that this year.

My son goes to public school and will be after schooling:

MATH - Singapore 2A/2B, IP, CWP, MEP, RightStart C (Selected Chapters), May be MM 2.

Writing - WWE 1 (Not done yet)

Grammar - FLL 1/2 (Not done with 1 yet), GWG (Going to try this)

    Spelling - AAS Level 2 and 3.

Vocabulary - Wordy Wise 1 and 2 (Starting this year)

Critical Thinking - Building Thinking Skills, Mind Benders and others.

    Geography - Maps

History - SOTW 1 (We just started it and will continue).

Science - R.E.A.L Science Odyssey LIFE (We did not make any progress on this last year)

  6. After schooling First Grader son did not like/want to do the following:

    • RSB - Most of the lessons were too simple for him. He loves Singapore Math and MEP. MEP was initially tough, but we did not give up on it. Now a days, we do selected problems in MEP.
    • WWE - We could only finish about 9 weeks. It brings tears in his eyes most of the time.
    • FLL 1 - Too much repetition for my son. We are slowly picking up the speed on this.
    • Artistic Pursuit - Did not have time to work on it.
    • SOTW - Hard to start. We are slowly picking up the speed on this.
    • RSO Life - We only did few lessons. We will try to continue this during this summer.

    We love:

    • Singapore Math
    • ETC
    • Critical Thinking Books
    • OPGTR
