  1. Hi! I'm Sara (without an "h":)) I'm mostly a lurker...on and off the board frequently. I feel like I'm still in the learning stages so I don't post very often. I love this board and the people here! I've been homeschooling my oldest DD for a year and we plan to homeschool through 12th grade. We do it for many reasons, but mainly because we want them to have a Christ-centered education.

I grew up in Hanover, VA. My husband and I got married in 2006 and resided in Hampton Roads, Va. He followed his dream to use his computer skills in Missions and in Nov. 2011 we moved across the country to San Diego, CA where my husband is a Web Developer for a Christian organization. We are a very blessed family:D

  2. NOTE: You are not filing a letter of intent. You are filing a private school affidavit (PSA). Remember that California does NOT have a homeschool law; it has a court case which decided that homeschools are the equivalent of private schools, and so homeschoolers file PSAs annually; they don't notify anyone that they are homeschooling. :)

Yes, I've been reading about the form I need to fill out. It's somewhat confusing to declare your home as a private school, but hopefully I can get through it with some online help when the time comes! Thanks for the info:001_smile:

  3. This has been helpful! This is my first time homeschooling in CA (we just moved here from VA) and I had no idea about how to file my letter of intent, etc...

One question I have is: My daughter who is officially starting Kindergarten will not be 6 until March 2013, so do I need to file a letter of intent this coming Fall or can I wait until the Fall of 2013?

    Thank you ladies!!:D

  4. I'm using her Letter of the Week and her K-4 curriculum right now. I agree, it is a lot of work to prepare everything, but if you do it over the summer and organize it, everything should flow quite well! I have at least 2 more children that will be using it so it's definitely worth it for me! Also, we have a black laser and a color laser printer...so this helped out quite a bit with all of the printing!

  5. We never have enough crayons, markers, colored pencils. We also go through a lot of glue. Get some scissors, dry erase markers, and a reusable handwriting white board (Target has them for a dollar). For us, nothing beyond that was really necessary...although fun!

I'd also use this time to stock up on pocket folders and file folders, notebooks, and note cards. We use the folders for lapbooks and organization. The notecards we use for memorization quotes, scriptures and poems. The notebooks are for my extensive list making. :)

Thank you! I do want to do lapbooks so file folders are going on my list and also notecards!!!

  6. We go through a ton of paper - K size lined paper, printer paper, construction paper (2 sizes if you want to do anything like history or lit. pockets), cardstock for various printables, bright printer paper for certain printouts or science experiments.

Pencils & lots of erasers, 64 pack of crayons (more variety of colors), people-colored crayons if you have the extra funds, glue & glue sticks for art projects

Thank you! Where do you buy K size lined paper?

  7. I have seen several threads on shopping for school supplies and the different deals out there already. It got me thinking about what I will actually need for my homeschooling kindergartner. She is my oldest and this will be our first year homeschooling. What sorts of things do I need to get for basic supplies? Thanks in advance for your help!!!:D

P.S. We will be just covering the three-R's this year!

  8. I pack lunches a lot! My kids love picnic lunches. I kinda take the bento box route. I highly recommend this blog... http://www.anotherlunch.com ...she has great ideas for lunches. Also I think someone mentioned about packing apples without turning brown...this lady uses Pink Lady apples and those don't turn brown after you slice them. They are pretty much the only apples I buy now...love them!

    Hope this helps!:)

  9. Hate the Shirley Temple version. There's a complete change in the plot--in the book, her papa was investing in diamond mines, got "brain fever" when it was thought that they were worthless and that he'd been betrayed by a friend, and died. Her papa's friend moved next door to Miss Minchin's, where Sara was living, and began searching for Sara when it was found out that the diamond mines really were worth a tremendous lot of money.

In the ST movie, Sara's papa fights in the Boer War, and is presumed dead. He isn't. It's a total screw up of the book.

As far as Sara being played by an older actress, well, Sara does age in the book. Although she is 7 when she first comes to the Seminary, she is, I think, 12 when her papa dies.

The best version, I think, is the Wonderworks version.

  10. Just have time to list one:

We live and breathe by google calendar. I have about 10 different categories on the calendar - each a different color. One for each kid's activities, one for family, one for just mom, one for just dad, one for schooling records, one for health (who had a fever, what medicine was taken, etc.) etc. We access the calendar by any computer and by our phones. As each child gets old enough we give them access to the calendars and allow them to add to some of them. I do keep one of the calendars totally private for my own use.

  11. Hi! We are very possibly moving across the country to the San Diego area! My DH has applied for a job out there and they are flying him out to meet him and have a final interview! Things are looking really good and they really like him so this is looking very possible for us. We are moving from the Va Beach, VA area ....so needless to say this is a huge move for us. I have really never moved anywhere so this is a bit scary for me! The area he would be working in is Lakeside. We are already looking at possible houses to rent, but I have no idea where to start. I don't know anything about CA and I've never been there! Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Just looking for a good safe area close to Lakeside!

  12. This might not be the most favorable answer, so it's my prayer that my words with the same intent they are written. Go back to God's Word. Linda, search for a pastor that truly teaches from God's Word. If you are looking for a pastor who fits your church, he will fail. If you look for a pastor who seeks God first, you're on the right track. Your church membership may dwindle down to almost nothing. But if you go back to the basics, your church will grow.

It's not about the head count or membership. It's not up to you to build your church. God will build HIS church, and He will bless the teaching of His Word. People will come to hear His Word, not because you offer the newest, next greatest program, food, megachurch, valet parking, special concert, Beth Moore study, Wed. night basketball, whatever. (And God is a whole lot bigger than a pastor's wife, lol.)

It's not about programs. Programs need to be maintained. They'll grow naturally when people are moved by the Spirit to minister. (And why on earth would a church trust someone without a history at a church to head up any kind of program?) Programs don't work when people are continued overwhelmed and working to make them work. (I have such an aversion to programs that I would naturally shy away from any church that has a bunch of "programs.")

There are a lot of churches out there in name only. (Look at the seven churches in Revelation.) Churches don't grow because men make them grow, or at least they don't stick around long. God's church grows when God grows it.

  13. Every 5th Sunday of the month, our Church hosts a "Family Day". It's either Pot luck or a themed lunch. Like for example, next Sunday is Soup/Salad. We provide soup and desserts and the Church provides the salad. This has worked well for us. My children don't have allergies so I don't really know the "ins and outs" of all that, but I actually pack their lunch and bring it with me on those days...it's so much easier than trying to juggle 3 plates and figure out what each kid will eat and so forth. Maybe you could do something like that for your kids so that you are still able to participate???

    :grouphug:

  14. Are there any particular math programs that look especially interesting??

Well I was looking into Saxon because from what I've heard/read, it uses lots of repetition. I struggled with math quite a bit in HS and college and I believe it's because I didn't have enough repetition. I'm hoping my kids take after my DH and don't struggle with math like I did. I just want them to have a good basis to build on. Sorry...I'm rambling! I also am considering Singapore and MUS. Suggestions and advice would be great!

  15. :iagree:I LOVE OPG - it is very well organized, easy to use, and it WORKS! I used HWT when my two oldest were just starting to recognize their letters and showing interest in writing and it was VERY good for their little hands - helped a lot to use the wooden blocks and the chalkboards.

WARNING: once you start researching curriculum, you'll NEVER stop! ;)

Best wishes and enjoy it - it is a WONDERFUL way of life!

Thank you so much for your input! I have been wanting to know more about OPG and also wanted some feedback on it! HWT is also something I had been looking in to! You are absolutely right about about researching curriculum...it's pretty much all I do now when I am on my computer! It's so hard to narrow it down. I think my hardest decision will be what math to use!
