Hello and thanks in advance for your feedback.
My third grade daughter will be taking the Iowa this year for the first time. Until this year, she has only taken the Stanford. I have a third-year Scoring High book for the Stanford. Will this practice help her with the Iowa? I ask because she has Dyslexia and I don't want any format surprises. I've been told the biggest difference is the timed tests but she will not be timed. Should I purchase the Scoring High for the Iowa?

We live right on the outskirts of Riverview and Fishhawk. We would love to find some other homeschooling families. We've taken part in both FISH and BHSF and neither one were a very good fit. FISH really is a good group but, unless you are in the co-op, it is difficult really meeting families. We'd love to find a smaller group.
We have a 12-year-old son and a 7-year-old daughter.

My seven-year-old is doing A Beka for math and doing wonderfully. She has used it since Kindergarten and generally scores over 90% on all math tests. I started homeschooling this year and am continuing with A Beka Math for her but she also does Time4Learning to really help get the concept. I was really skeptical on Time4Learning but I cannot say enough good things about it now. It truly is amazing if your child has Dyslexia. I am using it to reinforce other subjects as well (i.e. history, science and Language Arts).

7th Grade - started three weeks ago and doing a four-day school week.
Most importantly...we use SkedTrack so he can stay on top of his schedule.
Journal - expected to write for 20 minutes each morning on various prompts
Math - Life of Fred (Fractions, Decimals and PreAlgebra with Biology this year)
Math - supplementing with Time4Learning 8th Grade PreAlgebra
Literature - Literary Lessons from Lord of the Rings
Language Arts - Daily Grams and Time4Learning
Writing - Apologia Jump In
Spelling - A Beka 7th Grade along with Spelling City
Greek - Basic Greek in 30 Minutes a Day
History - Florida Virtual School World Geography
Logic - The Fallacy Detective
Classes outside the home with teachers:
Science - General Science
Intermediate Computer Science (programming with Java)
Lego Robotics
Activities:
Tae Kwon Do (working on black belt)
Boy Scouts
AWANA Trek
AWANA LIT (Leader In Training)
Bowling
This is a HUGE departure for us. Until now, he's used A Beka for almost all studies. His standardized test scores as a result are 'Post High School'. We wanted to make this year a bit more fun but still maintain a good academic level. We'll change things as needed but, for now, he is really enjoying his classes.

My son is mathy but we started Life of Fred a few weeks ago. He absolutely loves it. I even spent a rainy afternoon just reading the first book LOL. He is starting with Fractions and then Decimals. Because it is all review, he is moving quickly through the books. Our goal is to have PreAlgebra with Biology done this year.
You can do this...really :)

My son is also in 7th Grade. We found a book this year that he is really enjoying.
Basic Greek in 30 Minutes a Day
I don't know if this would work for you but I've started studying using this book with my son. I am really enjoying it as well.

As long as you file your paperwork, you are good to go. I would really second the idea of contacting your future high school and finding out what they prefer in the way of classes.
We used FVLS this last year and my son enjoyed his classes quite a bit. I wouldn't say it is as academically rigorous as something like A Beka but it is definitely better than the public schools. My son loved the 2D art program and enjoyed his Language Arts. This year, he'll be taking History through FVLS.
We actually moved to get away from the IB program. We had such a terrible experience with it and it really felt like it was more indoctrination than education. I do hope it is a better program where you are.

Lynn, thank you! These are some great ideas. I am really breaking out of comfort zone here but this forum has some wonderful ideas.
Question for you, I did a search of the LOTR lesson books. I cannot find any with sample pages to view. I'd really like to see what this looks like. Do you know if there are samples out there?

We are looking to shake things up this year. My son has done A Beka since Kindergarten. As a result, he scores really on high on the State tests. Generally above 90th percentile in just about all subjects.
However, now that we've reached Seventh Grade we want to mix things up and make his studies a bit more interesting.
A Beka is great. Yes, there is a lot of busy work but that is really what makes it so good. The kids learn what they need to learn.
We just need a change. We know we can always switch back. We're making this year fun but, at the same time, making sure he is challenged.
I'll be homeschooling my second-grade daughter as well. She is Dyslexic and I plan on devoting quite a bit of time to her. As a result, I'd like to find a Language Arts program for my son that is a bit more independent and, hopefully, fun. I've been told that since he did A Beka, we should probably look at 8th grade Language Arts curricula. Any recommendations? Is there anything you'd recommend that is computer or video based? We will be using Apologia Jump In as well.

I am more a mathy/science type of gal. I'm not as comfortable teaching ninth grade language arts. Are there any recommendations for a good Christian online course? I'd love for him to be able to interact with the teacher.
