  1. My daughter is the same way. She always seemed to be the worst when horseback riding.

My only advice is, if he is going to be out in the sun, make sure he is drinking some sort of sports drink instead of just water. Also, a banana a day, for potassium replacement, will help with this. It may be that he is flushing the minerals out of his body by drinking too much water and sweating it out. Potassium, sodium, and chloride are very important in regulating the body's temperature.

Also, stay away from caffeinated beverages and always have him carry so sort of water container, ice water if possible, with him so that he can dump if over his head and wrists if he starts to feel dizzy.

    HTH!

  2. We used Traditional Logic I this year with our 14 yo. She really prefers it over Introductory Logic. She will continue with TL2 in 9th grade.

Last year we used the Thinking Toolbox and The Fallacy Detective books with both kids 10 and 13. We also added in several of the Mind Benders workbooks for each as well as some Minute Mysteries and Wicked Whodunnit books for fun. I highly recommend doing something like this at least by 6th grade. It really has improved their logical reasoning and deductive skills without overwhelming them.

  3. Hi,

My son is working on his AWANA book and would like to find some information on Christian kids clubs outside the U.S. Can anyone living outside the U.S. tell us something about the Christian clubs your kids are attending. It could even be an Awana club.

He would like to know how the program is set up, what the kid's learn or what books they use, do they where uniforms, where do the kids meet, names of the leaders and groups, etc.

Thanks to anyone that can give him some information!

  5. Hi,

I do not have enough posts to sell things yet, so I thought I might be able to post some things that I have for free for shipping. Is this acceptable to do here?

    See listing in below post.

  6. I, too, have a middle schooler that I am trying to prepare for high school, so this thread is wonderful.

If you don't mind me asking, for those who have posted about concerns in writing, study skills and reading the great books, what books or methods have you found to be the most effective to accomplish this? Or, what do you wish you would have used?

These seem to be the greatest areas of concern for us, so any help insight would be a great help.

    Thanks,

    Susan

  7. Hi Anita,

I have been reviewing the different choices of curriculum used by others that posted their plans here. I wanted to thank you for also taking your time to help me out.

I saw that you have your children do a lot of essay and report writing in English and History and was wondering if you could tell me what you used to prepare them for this? Was it something that happened gradually over the years with an English currriculum or did you use a something that taught to essay and report writing specifically?

I hope this makes sense. I'm sort of floundering around trying to get ready.

  8. Hi Lori,

Thank you so much for this much needed information! I will start going through all the suggestions you gave me this evening. Odd, but it is a little exciting! Can you tell I am sooo new to this?

I will love to have the packet you put together so I will e-mail you in a little bit. Thank you again for this generous offer and all the advise on how to get further information in the future.

You have such a wonderful wealth of information and are such a blessing to me for sharing. I wish you lived next-door!!!

  9. Hi Jan,

Because they are published by K12 there is no ISBN. If you are looking for a Intermediate World History A TG, I have an extra one that I am willing to sell. I just don't have enough posts to advertise yet.

    Hi Jenny,

The TG and Student pages A go with the 1st year book, Prehistory thru the Middle Ages and the TG and Student pages B go with the 2nd year book, Our Modern World (thru 1914).

I don't know of any TG or SP for the 3rd book. Maybe someone else?

    Susan

  10. Maybe you could turn the conversation around if you are beside your daughter and, first, tell this mom that the reading program she suggests is not rigorous enough for your gifted child, and can she maybe suggest some more interesting and challenging books for your daughter's reading level. One thing this does is it puts the spot light on her, obviously what she wants, and either will make her put up or the opposite (which we don't say in our house).

At this point, I think, you will either get the titles of some books that you and your daughter could look into after she finishes The Hobbit, or you won't be bothered by this woman again in the near future.

Congrats to your daughter and what she is able to do at her age!

    Blessings,

    Susan

  11. Wow, thanks for the link WishboneDawn! We have the Houghton Mifflin set that comes in a cardboard slipcase. I got it for free at my local homeschool fair this year by trading in our old used books. The credit was enough to cover the cost.

My daughter is reading through these books this summer along with the literature guide published by Veritas Press. She really, really likes it.

I wish that I had had enough insight to look into the HM site before. I am starting to see many posts referencing the site. I think they have wonderful support for a lot of their curriculum.

Has anyone used anything of HM's that they especially like? Or, have you used just some of their free online links to support what you are currently doing (besides LoTR)? I would love to know what you think is especially worth while.

    Thanks,

    Susan
