  1. In a word, no. I see it as a vocab builder and that's it. It's great for that. But I suppose the grammar is supposed to be all intuitive and I don't think that works if you are not a baby or toddler. Atleast it didn't work for my son and wouldn't work for me. I need direct teaching on things like conjugation. We often mock RS by using sentences like, "The boy is standing under the airplane holding a ball." Lots of vocab there, but *why*?

My oldest couldn't say, "Where is the bathroom?" or "Do you speak Spanish?" by the end of 2 years. Granted, he is bright and lazy and fine with "C" work, but he memorizes stuff nearly instantly and still didn't get gain the ability to say every day sentences in Spanish. He couldn't do a present tense conjugation of the verb hablar or ser.

  2. A recipie I got somewhere on the net:

    1/2 cup yoghurt

    1/2 cup GF flour mix

Mix, spread, voila! It's very easy and very yummy. We use a pizza stone, but it's not a good idea to put a GF pizza on a stone that has had gluten pizzas on it, I put mine onto baking paper and slide it onto the stone, it gets the benefits of the stone without the contamination.

I so cannot believe this works as I use like 14 ingredients in mine....but I am willing to try.

  3. I guess that should say layering tanks no layered....

My daughter and I bought 8 colors of tanks from SugarLips. These are "One Size Fits Most"....um, most 13 year olds. I am like a size 10 and hover btw a M and L. They are tourniquets on me.

I loved these in concept as they have like 48 colors and cost $13. Anyone know of a company carrying tanks that actually fit women with "stuff"?

  4. My dh has been in sales and marketing for years. And he tells me that the list Sonlight uses is a classic marketing technique. I can't explain it as well as he did to me. More people reading that list want to be included in what Sonlight is, than excluded. The list helps them picturing themselves fitting into what Sonlight is.

I think this is it....no one wants to be the "moron" who is too narrow for this exclusive / (or should I say?) inclusive (if you think it leans lefty) club.

  5. that have yet to return to the faith you instilled in them? Just really looking for those who can relate and tell their story so I can be encouraged during a rough time presently. Very raw and sad right now.

I'm right there with you....my oldest is a video game addict living in a hotel room. And he knew the Lord. Solidly. A 30 on his ACT. Sigh.

My second son has been oppositional since age 2. Still at home but barely.

Praying for them, wishing we didn't have to live through this hell. And praying and hoping for a better outcome with my last 3. Hard to be brave.

    Wanna talk (so to speak)?

  6. This is why I don't want to see it, well, that and the fact that James Cameron wrote the script (I still can't forgive him for making Billy Zane say all those horrible lines in Titanic). However, a good friend suggested to me yesterday that I could see the film while listening to an iPod, and now I'm tempted.

    HAHAHAHAHA!! The Titanic Soudtrack? Gotta be better than the script.....JACK! JACK! JACK!JACK! JACK! JACK!JACK! JACK! JACK!JACK! JACK! JACK!JACK! JACK! JACK!JACK! JACK! JACK!JACK! JACK! JACK!JACK! JACK! JACK!JACK! JACK! JACK!JACK! JACK! JACK!JACK! JACK! JACK!JACK! JACK! JACK!JACK! JACK! JACK!JACK! JACK! JACK!JACK! JACK! JACK!JACK! JACK! JACK!JACK! JACK! JACK!JACK! JACK! JACK!JACK! JACK! JACK!JACK! JACK! JACK!JACK! JACK! JACK!JACK! JACK! JACK!JACK! JACK! JACK!JACK! JACK! JACK! (to the 10th power)

  7. I have mentioned to my daughter that maybe we should get her pastor involved and have a counseling session with him. Every time it gets brought up she starts crying and begging us not to. She says that she'll stop and that she's sorry. But yes it has crossed my mind. Although I have to admit I worry we will get labeled as a messed up/dysfunctional family. I guess if it changes things for the better IN our family it's worth it though.

It sounds like this gets her attention ....for a brief moment. Don't bluff or ask, just go. Heck with reputation. That said, you do have my sympathies. I have one child that has been what I have labeled Oppositional Defiant, OCD (obsessed with mirrors and hair), and Sensory Integration Challenged (Both tactilely defensive and sensory seeking). All of this I have figured out waaay too slowly and waaay late. He's 17. He throws WW3 fits about everything and anything and has since age 2. He finally threw a fruit bowl late one night and we called the cops. Four awesome officers lectured him about juvenile hall and the foster system and multiple things. It was a God-send. It was like we gave these folks a script of every of one our frustrations and things we've tried to tell him. It really got his attention. Things are still challenging and probably will be till he departs at 18 (promptly at 18), but he is much more careful to chill at much more rapid clip. It does have to get to reputation be d*mned--do what you need to do.

  8. ah, but within the realm of personal conviction, what may be obedient for one person may be legalistic to another. ;)

and the judge not thing has a couple caveats too.......

What is most telling in these times is the complete lack of the fear of the Lord and teachable spirit. When's the last time you heard someone say something to the effect of "What does the Word of God say? I want to please the Lord rather than suit myself." rather than justifications, interpretations, caveats and opinions. You don't. At least I don't.

  9. Tried to catch up on all the comments but it's not going to happen, so I guess I'll try the 60 second reply:

(start out serious): Legalism is indeed worse than indiscretion. (rapidly digress into sarcasm): Let's just walk around naked, since even if we cover every inch our bodies, there will be men who lust after us. There's no way we can not cause others to stumble, so that portion of Scripture which tells us to be sensitive to other people's weaknesses is just there for the rare spirit led moment, not every day living. And verses about modesty (as well as it being modeled throughout the Bible) really have no practical application today because of cultural irrelevance and the danger of any "effort" (actual acts of discerning and choosing) becoming legalism. (suddenly break out into song): Shake your booty, yeah, awhaw, I like it. (and finally, close with Shakespeare): Thou (of bare breast) doth protest.

    :p

What she said. Effort would be like sweating drops of blood which is SO New Testament....unthinkable.

  10. :w00t:

At the grocery store, at church ... and not just a little!!

    :001_huh:

Naturally, it would be legalistic to keep your items to yourself.:D (see legalism thread!) But seriously, it is bizarre to be checking your child into Sunday School and the helper is bending over signing them in spilling all their goods. It has happened to me repeatedly at many different churches. It's a systemic problem. I have told a few of them that their top was open and they just looked at me like I had two heads. I mean, spilling books is like spinach in my teeth--I want to know! Not these people. So, there's my husband and my 15 year old standing there having to practice eye-bouncing techniques in church. Women today are just selfish. They wear what they want to w/o regard to stumbling husbands and pubescent (sp) boys. Pretty gross if you asked me. Modesty is outdated I guess. See legalism.....obedience, the new legalism.

  11. In the context of overuse by the emergent leaning church I always say, "Obedience, the new legalism." It seems if you speak directly to just about any issue clearly addressed in scripture you'll be called a legalist. So, yes, there is true legalism and then there's this catch-all post-modern "I-don't-want-to-obey-scripture/God-when-it-offends-me-and-I-don't-agree-with-it-so-I-pull-the-legalism-card" thing that is far too common. The book of Timothy comes to mind.

  12. Not high on most of these so far. Picture of a boo hiney and a bustier with TMI spilling out put the Adams one back in the library bag post haste.

    Ordered from Amazon:

"The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress"

    Robert A. Heinlein;

    "The Once and Future King"

    T. H. White

"Isaac Asimov: The Complete Stories, Vol. 1"

    Isaac Asimov

    "Ender's Game"

    Orson Scott Card

    ***

As a side note, please pray for my ds18 if you would....

Bummer. I dunno how I made those choices. I am now scanning posts about Heinlein and he doesn't appear to fit the bill for "clean". Should I be wary of the others I chose?

  13. And that's the problem, I think. How the heck did it get to the point where young teens were encouraged to read this crap? Soft porn is exactly right, in my estimation.

What gets me is the "It's promotes abstinence" nonsense RE Twilight. Like heavy petting with a dead person is promoting abstinence. Sounds like an effective approach to virginity/purity. Just pet like crazy (Bill Clinton would say it's not technically sex) and pretend you'll die if you go all the way.;)

    Lovely, eh?
