  1. Hi Everyone,

I'm new-ish to Homeschooling and I need help looking for curriculum for my 11 year old daughter.  We pulled her from public school at winter break. Over the 20/21 school year I homeschooled my son.  I used mostly the WTM curriculum for my son. So I have some idea of how to approach it, but at the time my son was about 6.  Now with my daughter. She is 11 and in public school all her classes were advanced & she had 90% grades in every class.  So I don't want to say I'm in panic mode, but I am feeling a bit of pressure.  AHHHHHH!!!  😀😀. It's going to be ok. I know. As a Dad I'm going to be blessed to spend so much time with her.

    Curriculum I'm looking into

Grammar, English, Writing- Well Trained Mind mostly

Logic- The Basics of Critical Thinking by The Critical Thinking Company

Math- I don't really know, but I'm almost thinking of doing a service like Mathnasium (Your thoughts would help majorly. I'm poor in math)

    Science- Don't know

History- Don't really know. But I still have STW V1 from that I used it with my son.

My daughter is really into art.  She already goes to art classes at a local art studio.  She is also already working on learning to play piano.

    Sorry this is long!!

The best thing you could do is spend some time improving your own understanding of math and how to teach it.  The book Elementary Mathematics for Teachers is a wonderful resource for this.  As for programs, you're going to want to find one that supports your own teaching.  Khan does not do this.  It is opaque, meaning that you can't easily look ahead, and so you're having to backfill on the fly.  I'd take a look at RightStart and Singapore math as they are both excellent elementary math programs that have built in teacher helps.  Another program to consider is Math U See.

Thanks!  I ordedred the book.  Is it that obivious I'm not that great at math? 😏

  3. Hello Everyone,

I only started Homeschooling in Oct 2020 with my 6 year son.  We've been doing great, but over the past two weeks math has become a problem.  I've just been filling math in with Khan Academy, and he was doing fine.  He's in 2nd grade level on Khan, but he's just not getting carrying & borrowing.  He has all the other area's "mastered", but moving forward with carrying & borrowing doesn't seem to be happening.  The video's don't seem to help.  He also doesn't want to write anything down.  I've known I was going to find a better math curriculum than Khan, but I've been busy with family stuff. To be honest I realize.... A) I'm not the best math teacher B) I should have looked into a Math curriculum sooner.

I'm leaning twords MEP Math.  But I'm also intrested in Rod & Staff, Singapore, and Math Mammoth.  Is there anyone could share some of thier experiences with those curriculum with me?

    Thanks!

  4. Hi All,

We're just starting homeschooling with my 6 year old son.  We're doing most of the WTM curriculum for now.  I was wondering if you guys have recommenditons good literature to start with?  I'm thinking about The Trojan Horse: How the Greeks Won the War, and maybe getting Classics to Read Aloud by William Russell just for a start.  Any other ideas would be helpful

    We're doing

    Grammar-FLL

    Writing- WWE

Phonics/Spelling-  We're going to finish Phonic Pathways. Then move on to Spelling Workout.

    History- SOTW

Math- Khan Academy (For now. It's going to change.  trying to decide between Singapore,MM, & MEP)

    Sicence- Don't know yet

    Thanks!

  5. Hi,

My name Is Bryan.  I'm looking to start homeschooling, and using the Well Trained Mind curriculm.  I'm new to home schooling.  I have a 8 year old daughter, and a 6 year old son.  They are currently to distance learning.  I hope to learn a lot from these fourms, and I'm new to forums.  So please excuse any mess up for a bit.

    Thanks Bryan
