  1. There's a great app that I'm using called Remember Me that is specifically made to help you memorize Scripture.

There's a version for smart devices and they also have a website here: http://www.remem.me/

I'd have to agree with Bluegoat. I'm in HS and I pick all the verses I want to do, but I started doing it independently. What's a fun challenge for me (that I'm working on atm) is memorizing a whole chapter. Romans 8 is fabulous and so I'm starting with that. Maybe your kids could race to see who memorizes a verse or passage first?

  2. I'm sorry I saw this answer so late! I'm taking HSLDA online classes for the first time this year, and I like them a lot. Mrs. Cockerham is my favorite teacher, actually. I enjoyed the Biblical perspectives in an AP level class. However, my family is a relatively new homeschool family (This is our 4th year), and I've never taken AP classes before. So I don't have anything to compare them to. In my experience, though, they are great and I don't hesitate to recommend them!

Do you have any specific questions about them?

  3. I did Alg 1 and 2, and Geometry from a different curriculum in between. I'm currently taking AP Stat.

I got a 28 on ACT math, which is a little better than I expected.

As for topics they're covering that I haven't seen covered...hmm. I can't think of topic names off the top of my head, but graphing comes to mind. I don't see as much graphing in Saxon Alg.

I don't plan on going into any sort of math-related field :P

    Thanks everyone!

  4. This is kind of a misleading question, as I am definitely retaking it (I've only taken it once). My question is, to what extent will retaking it help?

I got a 31 but I hadn't studied many topics. I mostly reviewed timing strategies and took one practice test.

This score is good enough to get into the colleges I like, but they are close to the average freshman score.

I do know that I can do better if I study the trickier topics, but I've got a lot to do and I don't know how much time I can spend studying for the test.

It would be worth it though, if I could get merit aid because of a higher score. My target score for the retake is 33.

Could an additional 2 points in an ACT score give me a greater advantage in obtaining scholarships and merit aid?

Thank you, and I'm sorry if this post was jumbled.

  5. Would you consider Saxon at a lower level than other math programs? I'm just wondering because I've done Saxon Alg 1 & 2 and I have friends in public school doing similar level math but they cover many concepts I've never covered or even heard of. I just want to know where Saxon stands in the world of math books :P

I want to know because I may have to do a little extra math prep before college (It's senior year for me).

    Thank you very much!

  6. Have you looked at Destinos? It's free. It is an old production (streaming video) that was originally for college students (in fact, I used it in college). You can get a used text from Amazon for about $30 (2nd edition of alternative edition, I believe), and either the 1st or 2nd edition workbook (very little difference with the workbook). Part I is episodes 1-26 and is considered a one year high school credit, or a one semester college credit. You can find it here, and it has online quizzes, practice, and grammar as well: http://www.learner.org/resources/series75.html.

I looked over it a little and it looks good! We want to compare a few, so I'm definitely adding it to the list. Thank you!

  7. My daughter took that class with Carole Matheny a number of years ago.  It was an excellent class that prepared her well for the AP exam.

My daughter has since graduated from college; she has said that the AP Statistics class was one of her most valuable high school classes.

    Regards,

    Kareni

Oh awesome! It's only been a week so far, but I can tell she's very good. I like the way the class is structured too.

  8. I'm looking for a Spanish 1 curriculum for a younger sibling. We need books that are more suited towards self-teaching, and we'd like DVDs/CDs to help with pronunciation. We're also under a budget (We were going to get the ACE PACE Spanish 1 Set but the DVDs alone cost almost $300). Under $200 dollars is ideal, but if there is a very good curriculum, we'd consider going higher. What would you recommend as a good curriculum? Thank you so much!

  9. Dual enrollment would be great if available because it will also transfer and at many universities will satisfy your math graduation requirement. In general I think that I'd prefer to do it in person.

However, if that's not an option, potters school offers AP stats online. They mention that it's pre-approved for credit from Belhaven University, which would go on your transcript and have a reasonable chance of having it transfer. Here's the site for their class -- https://www.pottersschool.org/course/list/#course-3242 -- and there is a placement test.

Do you know how difficult/time-consuming AP stats would be? I'm doing two other AP classes this year as well, and I just don't want to load too much on myself. I'm definitely not a math person as well, so it may be a little harder for me.

  10. Why Precalculus?

I would suggest that you would get more out of a Statistics course.

Another possibility would be to do some College Algebra* one semester and do Stats in another semester your HS Senior year.

Have you narrowed down the colleges and/or majors you are interested in?  That would be a strong factor in selecting a course.

*My assumption here is that you would formally take College Algebra your first year in college.

You know what, I hadn't thought about that! I talked to my mom and we decided Statistics is probably much better for my career plans. Do you have any books you would recommend for self-study? Or even an online course? Thank you!

  11. I'm a homeschooled student entering my senior year next month, and I need some help finding a good math curriculum for this year. I've taken Saxon Alg 1, BJU Geometry, and I'll be done with Saxon Algebra 2 in about a month. I absolutely cannot stand Saxon, the main reason being that I don't (and won't) have enough time to complete everything they require. I'm also a very visual learner, and I really struggle with Saxon's teaching methods (I don't use the CDs).

I'm an okay math student-I have A's in all my math classes that I didn't use Saxon for, and B's for the Saxon classes.

I don't plan on going into any math or science field, so I don't care about rigor as much as I care about getting it done. I need a math curriculum (I would most likely do pre-cal this year) that would take less time for me, that I could teach myself from, and has a simple way of explaining things. What would you recommend?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you!

*I've been looking at Teaching Textbooks, Math-U-See, and Life of Fred. I like LoF best from what I've seen, but they don't have a book specifically for pre-cal, which is what I think I need. (If I'm wrong, please let me know! My family is fairly new to homeschooling)
