Hiragana on an ipad?

Recommended Posts

How do I type hiragana characters?  I have a language exchange app on my ipad and I would like to be able to type in hiragana and katakana during the exchanges.  I have a learn-Japanese program that allows me to do this, but I need the little pop-up keyboard to do it.  Or something.  I guess I could type in romanji on the English keyboard that pops up with the message text window and then use the transliterate function, but I would rather practise more directly.  Is there a way to do this?  The app is hellotalk.

Have you added the keyboard to your iPad? Settings/General/Keyboard/Keyboards/Add keyboard

Among the choices, there is Kana and Romaji. The spacebar is where it would usually be in the Romaji keyboard. The soacebar on the Kana keyboard is under the Backspace button and labelled in Japanese (空白). You switch between the different keyboards by touching the little globe icon in the bottom left corner of any keyboard.

You might not have needed to add Japanese as one of your preferred languages. I just have always done so things would ahow up natively if there was the option.

Hope that heps.

Ok. I think I have it figured out. It works as you described, except that to get the space bar to actually make a space, I have to select one of the choices it gives me in the bar above. Mostly, these involve kanji characters, but a ways down the list is the all hirigana option that I typed.

What a lot I am learning!
