Handwriting for 4 year old using Explore the Code

My 4 yr old DD is using Book A of the Explore the Code series and doing fairly well with it except for the writing portion. She can't seem to get the hang of writing the letters, yet can trace them just fine. Does anyone have a handwriting curriculum suggestion? I've been looking at Handwriting Without Tears and using some of the manipulatives, but am open to any suggestions!

Is your DD refusing to write them (which is where my DD was), or is she just writing poorly?

My DD3.5 has been enthusiastically tracing letters and occasionally writing letters on her own for a year, but only in the past month or so has wanted to do them on her own without tracing. And there was a huge explosion in this development, where she's writing them by herself all the time. It sounds like it might just be developmental readiness, and your DD is not quite ready to do it on her own. So in our case, it took a year of confidence building before she was truly ready.

I found somewhere online where I could print design my own tracing words (family names, pet names, fun words), and I found these more interesting/relevant words were a nice transition for her. http://www.kidzone.ws/tracers/none/index.asp

A friend of mine used HWT with her 6-yr-old with GREAT success. The title was appropriate in this case, because before that time there were lots of tears and moaning. Before implementing HWT, she took a full 1 or 2 month break and wouldn't let her DD do any classroom writing, so when they did pick up HWT her DD was extremely eager and loved every minute of it. Her mom is a psychologist ;)

My 4yo is the same. We got the HWT book, and she's been great with that - she's much more comfortable printing uppercase right now. Up until a few months ago she would only trace, and I just let her go with that. I got a dry erase book of tracing letters, in fact. Also HWT pre-k which is tracing only. After 6 mos or so of tracing she's feeling more ready to write for uppercase anyhow. For now I just let her skip that part of explode the code or write it in uppercase.

I think it is partially not being ready and partially just a mental block. She seems like she CAN do it if I work with her over and over practicing, but she doesn't like to try. I did let her just skip that part of the book for a while, I think I'll go back to that and get the HWT Pre K book to work on it with her. I'm glad to hear it is all tracing, I think she will like that better. Thank you bakpak for that link, I'm sure she will enjoy that a lot and it might get her more interested too!
