Kate CA
If so, which one would you recommend? Thanks!
MIch elle
Is that what you'll be using? We haven't used CLE LA yet but will be using CLE reading, math and LA for grade 7 in the fall. We'll use IEW History Based Writing Lessons along with CLE.

3byzaz
We use CLE with Meaningful Composition--IEW-like, but much easier--open and go and less expensive.

3byzaz
Here is the link: http://www.tfths.com/comp.php I believe it is a homeschool family and they do CQLA - Character Quality Language Arts - MC is the writing component of it. I have emailed with the lady and she is wonderful - very helpful. If you scroll through the FAQ's on the site, you will find what she based MC on (I think it's page 11--there are a lot of pages). There are a ton of new books this year. We used the 4+ and will be getting more for August. One of my favorite curriculum finds ever. It is written to the student and workbook format, but very much like IEW. Just simpler to learn, teach and of course...less money!! HTH! What grade did you use Level 4 for? I am really tempted to do that, but we will be doing CLE LA and it seems like Level 4 has quite a bit of grammar and it would be overkill. Is it "youngish" in its presentation? I am considering this as a "catch-up" of sorts as the program we have been using has been inadequate for formal writing. (LLATL) Thanks so much! You have been so helpful!
TracyR
Yes, you will need to supplement with a writing program. CLE sells one but you can use any program you wish. CLE's LA has some writing but not enough for most folks.

Quote from CLE site: "...Book 4+ (like all upcoming elementary level MC books) has a daily lesson format and a student-friendly tone. Designed for students at a 3rd-5th grade writing level, it is the only book in the MC series that contains actual grammar instruction due to the nature of it - teaching how to write a sentence (and what a sentence contains) and how to write a paragraph (and what a paragraph contains) during the first few weeks. We have found an unexpected advantage to Meaningful Composition 4+: middle school and older students who have had years and years of grammar instruction without writing instruction are using MC 4+ to “remediate” their composition skills. We have had older students complete MC 4+ within a month, and thus, catch their writing skills up to their grammar and spelling skills in short order. This is done easily in MC 4+ because it does not contain “superfluous” grammar and writing items (like direct objects and imagery) - just the bare bones of what a student needs to know to write sentences, paragraphs, and multi-paragraphs and how to revise essays using our Checklist Challenge. (Note: The "plus" books in the MC series (4+, 6+, and 8+ - the books currently available) are helpful for remediation for students up to a few grades above that book in that they have elaborate instructions on Key Word Outlines, Checklist Challenge revising, and other writing skills that students who have not written a lot may have "missed.")." http://tfths.com/comp.php
Kate CA
Thank you for this! Yes, I have been spending some time on their site. What an interesting program! KDBask
When you say that you used MC, there are two semesters listed there. Did you use both or did you find the first semester to be enough? Are they consumable like the CQLA? Thanks.
