3lilreds in NC Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 I have the 3x5 boxes for the cards, and that's OK. I wish I'd laminated them, but oh well. It would have required a bigger box and I didn't want to bother with that. The thing is the spelling tiles. I have them in snack-sized baggies that are supposed to go in our rolling crate of "teacher stuff." I do not wander around with them, because I like to find them where they are supposed to be. However, when I went this morning to find dd6's bags so we could replace an "l" that is missing, they were nowhere to be found. I have looked everywhere. I've taken the very messy school area apart trying to find them, and even looked in places I thought dh might have put them if he'd come across them while picking up. I can't find them and I'm so frustrated. I know this is my fault for being disorganized and not teaching my kids to put things back. I just wondered if you have a container that effectively holds your cards, tiles and tokens in one spot so you don't have to keep looking for the rotten things when it's time for spelling. Quote
Deece in MN Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 After a bit the 3 by 5 index card box was not big enough to hold all the cards. I found a box that holds 4 by 6 index/recipe cards lying around so I put the cards in that instead. I have the tiles in baggies and tuck them into the box with the cards (the tokens, too). All I have to do is pull out the box and everything is there. I am going to have to find a different box/container when we start level 3 because all the cards will not fit into our current box, but I will deal with that then. :) Quote
SkiMom Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 I struggled with how to store the tiles too! For awhile I had them in ziploc baggies, which wasn't the best. My problem wasn't losing tiles...it was the fact that it was taking way too much time at the beginning of each lesson to sort them all out. So...I put magnetic tape on the back of each tile and now I store them all, in order, on a magnetic board. It isn't a perfect system... but it's much, much, better than what we were doing before! :) Quote
Josie Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 Did you buy the magnets for the tiles? I didn't at first, but quickly put in an order for them. I can't imagine keeping track of them without the magnets. We just store ours on the magnetic board. The dc know not to take them away from the board. Quote
mamato3 all-boy boys Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 I also finally magnetized the letter tiles. I bought a role of magnetic tape at Walmart and watched Extreme Makeover: Home Edition one night while I did this mundane task. I then purchased a $@ or $3 set of cheap cookie sheets at walmart and I'm using those instead of a magnet board to store the tiles -- I like the lip/ edge around the edge which protects the tiles when I slide the cookie sheet on edge into the bookshelf. daisychics Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 This is my very first post.... :) I just bought magnetic strips at Michael's http://www.michaels.com/art/online/displayProductPage?productNum=gc0467 I didn't want to order the magnetic tiles (they have it available now) because I already had the old tiles. So, I cut the magnet strip tapes and stuck them on the back of the tiles. wala! Magnetized tiles. It's really cool, I wish I thought of it myself... I hated putting them away in the ziploc baggies. AAS book 3 recommends buying a magnetic board. My son and I alphabetize it on the top of the magnetic board. I just store the magnetic board on the shelf and pull it out when we need it. kaylk in tx Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 next year when my twins start spelling, they'll all have their own cookie sheet with their own tiles!:) Quote
Hot Lava Mama Posted March 1, 2008 Posted March 1, 2008 I didn't have the money to get a magnetic board at the time, so I searched my house for something to store them on. I kind of needed my "one" cookie sheet that I have, so I found an old broiler pan that came with my oven (which I never used). I put the tiles on that and pull it out when it's time for spelling. It isn't "pretty" but it works, and wasn't expensive! Oh, I'm not a big "cooking" kind of gal, so I store the tiles in the drawer under my oven. My kids don't even know it's there, so they don't get messed with! Quote
kfrench Posted March 1, 2008 Posted March 1, 2008 Alot of the small white boards are magnitized. I would have them use the white board markers to practice writing the words too. Saves lots of time. Kris Quote
ELaurie Posted March 2, 2008 Posted March 2, 2008 in alpha order with a rubber band around them. However, I may try the magnetic tile idea! Quote
