I'm scared to get a free facial

Recommended Posts

I received a coupon for a free facial at a spa (apparently $120 value). I know that many of you swear by such things but I'm scared to do it. I break out easily from some chemicals (I don't know which ones). All I know is that I had to search high and low for a shampoo that doesn't make my scalp break out - Herbal Essences is what I found that works for me. I'm also so non- frou-frou that I probably cross over the line into being frumpy. I don't have nice enough clothes to go to a spa! There is the question of what to do with my kids. My kids will sit quietly in waiting rooms with their work or a book but how long does something like this take? Also - if I do this, will they give me some hard sell to spend actual money at the spa? :001_huh:

I'm scared, but the Scots in me doesn't want to let this free offer go to waste! Is this free offer for me?

Facials are fun. Don't be afraid! Tell them you break out easily, they will be able to use products made for your skin type. My spa doesn't use "chemicals" but natural products (strawberries, nuts, etc) When I go to the spa, I go in yoga pants or jeans & bring my bathing suit. For your facial, they'll probaby have you remove your clothing & wrap in a towel or robe (they provide).

Oh the kids aspect, you should probably find a sitter. My facials are generally 1 hour long. I think, at least here, leaving kids in a waiting room may be an issue and wouldn't be accepted to well. Finally, end the end, they will "show you" the products you used and they will be costly. I go enough that sometimes I buy it, sometimes I don't. I will ask them for a business card or info on the products so I can look over/remember them & come get them if I like how my skin feels later that day.

Go! Have Fun! Relax! Enjoy it!!

Call first and see if they have a sensitive line or all natural line. No fun to be uncomfortable and than break out horribly.

When I gave facials they would last one to two hrs. And dont mind what you go in, most people show up in super casual clothing, because you do remove top and bra, to rub shoulders and neck.

Kids and spas dont mix. If you are already antsy that aint gonna help. Have someone watch kids.

Enjoy, relax.

Really? One must undress for a facial?

these days my own dh can bearly convince me to take my sweats off for bedtime, ain't no way some gal with chemical peels and such has a chance.

aside from that, I don't like them. the first and last cured me of any possible notion of doing it again. I don't have the patience to sit still that long while some puts goop on my face. Goodness, I don't even wear makeup most days. and I have a bad back and find those chairs uncomfortable after 10-15 minutes. and the clincher, my face does horrible things for no known reason. I have mild breakout just with water. It's truely tempting faite to use any soaps, scrubs, or cleaners. I could breakout, get burnt (looks like a sunburn and stings), or both.

so.

if you are like me.

which can be apparently be summed up as cheap and possibly "frumpy" delicate skinned kind of gal;)

I'd give the coupon as a gift to someone who woudl enjoy it.

and posted on my blog http://www.theamusingredhead.com . I was horrified when she said "Take everything off from the waist down" . I didn't enjoy it too much but I don't like having my arms, neck and upper chest massaged by a stranger. My relatives love facials. I think if you think you would enjoy it you should go for it.

I've done that, too.

OTOH, you'll still have to tip the facialist, so you're looking at about $25.00 just for the tip, so by the time you pay the sitter and tip the aesthetician, your $120 facial isn't as free as it seems. If you're not totally fired up about the facial, take the tip money and the money you would have paid the sitter, and take yourself shopping and to lunch when your dh can watch the kids.

Is the spa a local business or a national chain? If it's a chain, maybe you could sell your coupon on eBay.

Maybe I need to get a new salon, again, just for hivers. That is the strangest thing. Why would you take everything off from waist down. Thats just strange.

If you feel really uncomfortable go w/ a top that has straps or a tube top, or like someone else mentioned a bathing suit.

The whole idea is to relax and feel comfy. If my clients are not happy, they will not come back, what good does that do me.

I have to tip the facialist?! (Again, my Scots heritage coming through. . .)

:iagree: 100%

And NO kids. Most spas don't even allow them because it is all about relaxing. :)

Yes. That's why I suggested that this facial isn't as free as it seems. It's a great deal if you really want to go, though.

I've had quite a few facials, and I have never thought they were anything to write home about, and if your spa is anything like Georgette Klinger, your facialist will spend most of her time trying to sell you the products. There can also be extra charges for special masks and other treatments, so be sure to let them know that you only want the services covered by your coupon. Otherwise, the cost can go up pretty quickly, and $120 doesn't go very far (at least not in my area.)

I'm not trying to discourage you, Jean, because you might really love it, but I wanted you to be aware of the possible downside.

PS. How did you get the coupon? Was it a gift, or some sort of spa promotion? If it was a gift, you might be able to cash it in for some skin care or makeup products if you don't really want the facial. If it was some sort of spa promotion, be extra-careful about those sneaky add-on services and the hard-sell approach.

I got the coupon for buying some pretty expensive New Balance shoes. So I'm sure it is a spa promotion.

Dh and I talked about this tonight and I've decided to pass. For just the cost of the tip I can get a ton of avocados and make my own face mask in the food processor! Dh says I could even afford a couple of cucumbers for my eyes!

no way?! and $25 for it? you gotta be kidding? you're saying they think they automaticly deserve a 20% tip just because you walked in? when you are already giving them $125 bucks? that's ridiculous, imnsho.

maybe.

maybe not.

men are weird creatures.

;):D

just an aside, the one facial I had WAS for sensitive skin and considered all natural stuff. just because it's "natural" and or for sensitive skin doesn't mean you won't have a bad reaction to it.:)
