Jackie in AR Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 Or go ahead and let the kids at em? This year I kept them on the top shelf and would pull them down to the next shelf the week we were on them. Then they would be moved to the next shelf where they can read them anytime and they do often re-read the Sonlight books. So I have several big orders coming for next year and have outgrown one bookcase. My boys will be jumping out of their skin to scan through them. I never thought I'd be asking about "locking" up books - LOL! I let them go ahead and read. Life is short, and there are lots of books. :D I'm not going to deprive them of the enjoyment of reading a good book at a time other than when it is "scheduled." When that book does appear in our reading, they can skim (or reread) it if they've forgotten things. Quote
Beth in Central TX Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 I would go ahead and let them read. I think it's better to have a book read more than once for discussion purposes, but we generally don't have time. In my experience, our older boys are slowly outgrowing the excitement of new school books. Even though, it's still one of my favorite parts of homeschooling. Quote
elegantlion Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 If they are excited, yes, let them peruse!!! We switched to hand picked curriculm last year and I didn't let ds see everything, only because I knew the sheer volume of books would overwhelm him. This year I have slowly been collecting material and it sits on the same bookshelf as what we are currently using. Quote
mrscopterdoc Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 Do you mean books for reading or textbooks? Textbooks for the next school year I put up [not hide] mostly for me! :) We need to finish this year and then we can move on. If I didn't practice self control we would never finish anything! LOL Books for reading get read whenever we want. Quote
Holly IN Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 I hide the consumable ones when my mil is here. She thinks because she has a masters in education she is privvy to my stuff. So I hide them just because of her. Otherwise it would be on my shelf with the other new stuff. Holly Quote
SheilaZ Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 I gave up on saving stuff. Yesterday, I recieved the Prentice Hall Life science, Earth Science, and Physical Science books. My 6th grader latched onto the Life Science book and hasn't stopped reading it. I figure, if he's that excited about it, then I should take advantage of it. Quote
3lilreds in NC Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 My girls love books, of course, like everyone's here. :) My oldest, especially, likes to wander around with piles of books and leave them all over the house. Naturally, it's usually books we need for school that wind up missing, simply because those are the ones I'm looking for, if you KWIM. I have a shelf in our bonus room for school books, and I try to discourage them from taking those away, but you know, I love books too and it's hard to tell them they can't have a book they'd like to look at. As per my spelling irritation post, it's my fault for not teaching them to put things back where they found them. Heh. So anyhoo, I'm considering putting things away where they will not be mislaid until after we've used them. The exception would be the Little House books; they're on the roster for MFW Adventures next year, but we've been reading them together and I won't stop just because we'll be using them again. They will like reading them another time, I'm sure. Quote
PeterPan Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 I keep everything in a large box, hidden in the closet. I give it all to her on the first official day of our new school year (early July for us usually) and make a big deal of it, taking pictures of the spread, going through each one gingerly, etc. I also hold aside a box of some things to dole out during the school year as needed to add perk. This year I bought a bunch of awesome art supplies and rather than give them to her all at once, the vendor where I bought them suggested giving little bits at a time. It's been really fun because when she hits a low or is bored or bummed (happens when you have an only...) I can whip out a cool sculpture book or new paints or things. So that closet is pretty much my secret place she can't get into. Quote
Quiver0f10 Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 I just bought TOG and all the books they will need to go with it. I told them to not touch them, because they will read them all before school starts LOL. If they want to go through their science books or other readers, I don't mind. Quote
WTMindy Posted February 29, 2008 Posted February 29, 2008 If they want to read them early it just gives them a headstart for when we get there. I'd still make them read the book again while we are studying it, but I wouldn't hide them. Quote
