Book to teach ME literary analysis?

Is there a book out there geared to the teacher - telling me what IS literary analysis - what I should be telling my kids to look for, questions they should be asking themselves, ages that certain things are expected/appropriate - so that I can learn how to teach this and apply it to any book we want to read?

I know this question seems so basic, but all the curriculums I've looked at pick apart particular books, and I'd rather learn for myself how to teach this well for any book! :)

Thanks.

Reading Strands (http://www.writingstrands.com/reading-strands.asp) and Teaching the Classics (http://www.centerforlit.com/) are both designed to teach you the teacher how to teach literature. Both are also available at http://www.rainbowresource.com

Also, the first few chapters of Susan Wise-Bauer's "The Well Educated Mind: A Guide to the Classical Education You Never Had" are very helpful in explaining how to go about reading / thinking about / discussing / analyzing literature. "How to Read a Book" by Mortimer Adler is somewhat similar, in teaching you how to read/analyze literature.

And below is a thread with great ideas for various literary programs for various aged students, plus it has links to several other great past threads on this topic. BEST of luck in finding what works for you. And enjoy your literature journey! Warmest regards, Lori D.

Great reviews at Amazon too. I remember my mom talking about and recommending this book. Thanks to you, I just requested it from the library.

Thanks again everyone! This was one area I *knew* I would struggle with more than others soon. Teaching calculus? Let me at it. Teaching literary analysis? Hide me! :tongue_smilie:

And special thanks to sagira for recommending the LIBRARY. I can't believe I didn't think of checking there first for some of these things! :001_smile:
