LinRTX
So today is the second time in a week I have almost stepped on a snake! Saturday my husband killed it with an axe. Did you know that if you leave some body attached to the head it will crawl off ------- for yards! Also you can stomp right behind it and it just lays there, but if you roll a large empty garbage can over it, it rears its head up and turns to strike you. Then it commonly slithers away, while you are shaking like a leaf because the only way you can get the garbage can where it needs to be is to roll over the snake and you stompe so it would move and it didn't and you cannot bear to actualy kill it because it is bigger than a cockroach. Yes, this is what happened just 5 minutes ago. We ususally see 2 snakes a year. I'm done. I hope the snakes are. Linda
Dobela
You must have had a nasty snake there. It just makes me shiver! I have seen on Discovery shows where dead snakes can bite and if they are poisonous inject venom into someone. The scariest situation I had with a snake in recent history was 4 years ago. I was foster parent to a child that was legally blind. My then 4 yr old came to me (we were outside) and said I needed to see the weird worm in the garage. Not 1 ft from the blind child was a baby copperhead about the size of a pencil. It was viscous!!! I used a hoe, an axe, a sharp shovel and it still kept bearing it's fangs at me. Finally I was able to put it in a bag, then another bag, and drop it in the freezer to kill it.
Melissa in Australia
if you completely decapitate the snake's head, the head can still bite you if you touch it. we have so many snakes around our place that they don't even bother us . it would be nothing to see 2-3 snakes on a walk around our property. they are all venomous around here. but keep mostly to themselves if left alone. They're pretty common in the county where I live. More than anywhere else I've lived. Yuk! (But too many mice would be yucky, too)

I am pretty sure I would have used the hoe, shovel, and axe to chop it into tiny little pieces. *shudder*
Starr
Our year old kitten catches snakes in our basement and plays with them. Thank goodness we live in the north and they are harmless!
Peek a Boo
my son probably would have caught it for his reptile collection. :D We like snakes around here. They keep the rodent population down and are usually harmless. cockroaches are the big No Nos, lol! we have watched a guy w/ SnakeEncounters.com do a program for the kids a couple times --he is a HOOT! Him: what should you do if you ever see a snake? kids [in unison]: tell an adult! him: NO.... that's the last thing you should do. they'll just wanna kill it :D
Amy loves Bud
We had a major copperhead problem in the old neighborhood. My daughter (2 at the time) pulled a baby copperhead out of a bucket of sidewalk chalk. She was screaming that it bit her, but I had her stripped down in about 2 seconds and there was not sign of a bite. The neighbor was a vet and said that the babies sometimes have difficulty opening up wide enough to get a good bite. Thank goodness! The nextdoor neighbor pulled down his baseball mit from a shelf in the garage to find one coiled up in it. Then he and my husband played Keystone Cops trying to capture it for release into the wild. It finally got tired of their antics and got vicious. So the wannabe nature lovers smashed his head in. For about two years we found the copperheads all over the place in our yards. The neighborhood was new construction backing up to a very large bird sanctuary. I think they were displaced and it took them a while to settle back into the woods. And *THAT* (well, those and the nasty spider problem) is why I like living in the USA ... wildlife-wise. I like that if I see a snake here I can figure there's only about a 25% chance it's poisonous. Those are much better odds.
