Mandy in TN
I know a family that wants to homeschool next year and have asked me for suggestions. They are an Indian family and their dd is a little cutie that I work with at the Kumon center. She misses the cut-off to start K in the fall, but she is already reading. By reading I mean that she knows the Kumon center list of 100 sight words, can read CVC and CVCe words, knows her beginning consonant digraphs (sh, ch, th, wh), and consonant blends. She reads fluidly and without hesitation. She wants to "do" school right now and they would like suggestions for curriculum to use with her. The family speaks Hindi at home and, although they are currently living in the US, culturally they are very definitely Indian. As she is learning phonics at Kumon, I am not sure that she needs another phonics program. So, other than phonics, any ideas? Thanks- Mandy
LadyAberlin
Could they do Right Start math or Singapore with her? Are they wanting to homeschool homeschool her? Like all subjects or are they just looking for supplemental stuff? Moving Beyond the page is for gifted kids.
Ohdanigirl
I second RS math. I could kiss the person who mentioned it to me on the boards. I bought it to start once ds turns 5, but the moment he saw it I had to let hime do a lesson. Now he pulls it out everyday, and this says a lot because he insists he does not want to go to school ever. But he loves RS, shhh don't tell him it's school. blessedmom3
Sonlight is great for literature ,Science and History and Horizons for math . I bought Singapore Math for my son , he doesn't like the workbook because it's not colorful and the writing in it is too small. Horizons for lower grades (K-3) is the best , then switch to something else , I would say CLE Math or BJU . If they want a curriculum in a box, A Beka would be a good choice. ElizabethB
Actually, they do need more phonics--Webster's Speller. The accent patterns of the 2+ syllable words are very useful for my ESL students, they help them get the cadence of the language. The way they're broken up, a K student can easily learn 3, 4, and 5 syllable words with no problems once they've mastered the syllabary. I didn't realize how accent dependent English was until I started using Webster's Speller. The arrangement of words by accent pattern is especially helpful for ESL students and students with speech or language problems.
