Singapore Chemistry Matters Answers?

Recommended Posts

I am using Singapore Science Chemistry Matters and am wondering if anyone has the answers to the exercises at the end of each chapter. I have the teacher's edition for the workbook, but cannot find one for the textbook. It has been a long time since I took chemistry! If anyone else found an answer key or teacher's book, please let me know.

Thanks

that is why I ended up switching from biology matters to Spectrum Chem.

I spent the whole year last year looking up the answers or doing my best to figure them out. to be honest we did not do half of the text questions unless I was able to find the answer in the text. We used the workbooks exclusively and I made study guides for the text.

Let me tell you it was a lot of work...

So even though I LOVE biology matters - I could not do all that work again. So we switched..

I doubt you'll find an answer key any time soon. I just finished teaching this in our co-op, so I'm quite familiar with the program. It is not one I would recommend for anyone who doesn't have a decent chemistry background. I did make my own answer key to the text questions but they really aren't in any format (at this point) to share - rather just part of my lecture notes.

I think the text questions can easily be skipped in favor of the workbook. That said, even though the workbook has an answer key, it is not explanatory. There were times I had to mull over problems in order to see what steps they had skipped over or what equations they had combined. But the questions in the workbook are quite similar to the ones in the text. I used the text questions as part of my lecture in order to help the kids with the workbook.

I really, really like the program and plan to use it again with my 2 youngest boys (unless a newer one comes along with a teacher manual). But I'm quite confident with chemistry at this level. My suggestion is to chuck the textbook questions and just work out of the workbook. I think your student will do just fine with that.

I ordered and reviewed Singapore. The workbook is excellent- there are a lot of graphs/tables for interpretation (not to mention all of the problems). I definitely plan to work it into our year. I'm not sure what I think of the text. It seems to omit topics that I thought were standard.(I am somewhat comfortable with Chemistry, and dh taught Chemistry long ago).

I'm still in a quandry about over what I will use. So far I have-

TTC dvd's

Singapore

Prentice Hall (waiting for a used copy I ordered from Alibris)

Apologia (general and advanced)

I think I have issues

You're right that there are some topics not presented that are standard in a US textbook. I think it's similar to the Singapore math where we've found the same thing. Some topics are presented without the traditional "name" such as Lavosier's Law, but the Ideal Gas Law is omitted. It's really a toss up. What I like most is that Singapore does a fantastic job with critical thinking, application, and data interpretation. On the other hand, Apologia (which my oldest used), focuses heavily on the mathematics without a lot of reasoning behind it. Apologia is also weak on those issues which I found strong in Singapore. I think a course of Singapore Chemistry with The Teaching Company Chemistry would be a good hybrid. You would get the heavier mathematics and "laws" from TTC's course and the conceptual understanding from Singapore.

My oldest used Apologia Physical Science, Biology and Chemistry and my 2nd son has used Conceptual Physics, BJU Biology, and Singapore Chemistry. Their ACT scores for the same time period (April of 10th grade) showed that son #2 outscored son #1 by 4 points on the science section. Their PSAT scores were within 2 points so they really seem to have similar ability. I think son #2 did better because of the critical thinking and application that he had been exposed to in the other science sequence.

I'd love to hear what you think about Prentice Hall. I haven't see that.

Prentice Hall is the text used by Kolbe Academy. I like the supplemental lab dvd that they offer. It would help with labs that we can not do at home. It is interesting that most of the syllabi that i find for PH do not cover the whole book. I hope to get it in the mail today- I'll let you know

Did your ds use both the Apologia Chemistry and Advanced Chemistry?

No, he just used the first course. I opted not to do the advanced because, although it would be new material, it would still be presented in the same method - and that's what I don't care for with Apologia, the method of teaching.

That said, my "Apologia" son is finishing his first year of Petroleum Engineering on a full tuition scholarship, making the Dean's Honor Roll as well. He has earned A's in his sciences, so I think that the student's drive is probably the most important factor in determining success or failure in a given field. I just like a program that makes science more interesting than Apologia does.
