deeinfl
I have read a few chapters of this online and was wondering if anyone else has used this? Can you share your experience with using it and your schedule? How long did it take you to get through it? Did your children enjoy it? Did you supplement with anything else? Thank you and blessings!! Laura Corin
I use TCO with SOTW and Our Island Story. The schedule is in the side bar of my blog. A word of warning: TCO contains attitudes to other races and faiths that reflect the author's upbringing and the date of writing of the book. I spend a lot of time talking through these attitudes as we read the book. Best wishes Laura
sagira
I have read from others and then went to check myself that there are several mentions on Native American portrayal as "savages" and other negative and derogatory comments on other peoples and a very heavy bias. Otherwise, I do love the writing and how it pulls you in. I have decided to get other books in the same spirit as this one, Mara Pratt's American History Stories. I like this better and though it's conservative, it's also respectful IMO. I'm using The American Story: 100 True Tales from American History to give a modern, politically correct overview to have both sides covered :)
Mama Lynx
We use it, and discuss the attitudes and biases that show through. We have it scheduled in with TOG, so I actually don't know how long it's taking us to read it ;-) It's used as a spine, and then we add in other readings when interested/when it's relevant or important. I particularly like the way TCOO goes through each president. We're learning a great deal of presidents that were barely given a mention when I was in school. KAM
I just started reading it as a go along to some chapters of SOTW II. It's great so far (except for the mention of "savages" which I've had to explain!) I also have a link to our reading schedule for history on my blog. We are using SOTW II, TCOO, and Our Island Story. HappyGrace
but my third grader found it dry this year. I loved the conservative content, but it just didn't work. But then again, she was used to SOTW, so maybe that's it?
