LunaLee
The kids and I are going up to Traverse City in July to visit my dad for a few weeks. He wants to make sure the kids see/do a lot while we are there. I know he wants to take them to Makinaw Island (?) and we are going to go to the big 4th of July Cherry festival...Any other suggestions? We are pretty open. KatieJ
Definately go to Mackinac. (It's pronounced with a W at the end, but is spelled with a C. ) We were reading Paddle to the Sea one fall and decided a trip to Mackinac was in order. There is a town called Mackinac and then the Island. You will need at least a day for each. I really have not been to Traverse City except on a girl's weekend and we just stayed in our Condo/resort. LOts of talking and eating..no siteseeing. But maybe by bumping this up, someone else will see it.
CactusPair
Definitely go to the Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. Climb the dunes, see Lake Michigan as you reach the top, visit the beach below. It is so legendary & beautiful--my favorite place in the world! There is also a nice large hiking trail nearby--Old Indian Trail, I think it's called. There are bird sanctuaries in the area, too, and lighthouses. Old Mission Pt. is cool, as is Sutton's Bay, and Leelanau penisula sp?). Enjoy your visit!
JumpedIntoTheDeepEndFirst
There are also lots of sites in that area for activities like canoeing and such. Fort Michilimacinac (in Macinaw city) as some great education activities and resources on their website. Don't forget to eat the fudge! And buy some cherry butter. The rest has been said above. CactusPair
wanted to 2nd the recommendation for canoeing. Platte River has some fun canoeing, and you can choose the 2 hr. or 4 hr. trip. we had the greatest time there as kids.
Amy in MI
Driving up the coast of Lake Michigan is a wonderful trip, I would stop in Glen Arbor while visiting Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes, then continue up the coast to visit Leland and Northport. LunaLee
Thanks ladies, great ideas. My dad is happy to be home after almost 40 years in California and he's really excited to show the kids MI. When I told him what everyone said, especially about the fudge, he laughed and said "What? How do you know about the fudge?" I told him about my hive friends and he laughed,"Where do you meet these people." He thought it was pretty cool that we all "get together". I had sand in my eyes, nose, mouth, ears, etc... When I got to the bottom I decided maybe I shouldn't have done that.
