Jen+4dc
Hi all, I'm new here but have learned sooooo much reading your posts. Thanks! I'm hoping someone can tell me where to start with my dc. I just bought FLL1/2 and WWE for my 1st grader (we'll be schooling all summer since the Navy sent us on a cross-country move mid-year and we've gotten a little behind;)). We'll start those next week. He's motor skills are still developing (typical 6 year old boy) but he'll catch up. My question is for my dd12 and ds10 who will be in 5th and 7th grades next year. I'm looking for grammar and writing instruction for next year. The public schools they went to basically taught no grammar other than nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs. (Grammar is not my strength, either, and I detest writing). So, I'm basically starting at the beginning with them. I'm sure I could whiz them through FLL1/2 at a faster pace but where do I go from there? Any suggestions on how to catch them up without feeling like I need to cram 4 or 5 years of grammar into one? Is there a program out there that might help them catch up without making them feel like they're behind forever and can never catch up? My dd12 should be hitting the logic stage soon with writing and grammar is really going to hold her back. BTW I plan on using WWE with the older 2 as well, just going at a much faster pace (I hope, we'll see after they take the evaluations for Year 1 and Year 2). TIA, Jen:bigear:
Mom2GirlsTX
Easy Grammar would work. It is not remedial, but it is easy as it suggest, just one page basically a day. Do searches here about EG or Easy Grammar and you will find more information. You can also go to Easy Grammar web site and read more about the program, I think your children would not be put off by it, nor intimidated, yet it will teach them what they need to know. Jen+4dc
Any ideas on which level to go with? Do they have placement tests?
Mom2GirlsTX
Jen, see the links below that will take you to previous threads about this. But to answer your question, I would do Easy Grammar 5/6 with the younger and EAsy Grammar Plus with the 7th grader if you can buy the older editions that are on sale here http://www.easygrammar.com/sale.html The great thing about the older editions, the Teachers Editions is that you can use them for your kids to write in, but the answers are on the left side and the right side is the same but without the answers so the child can work the right hand workpage and then you just check the answers. If they are out of those (super deal at $8.00 a piece) then I would just buy the appropriate grade level that your kids are in, 5th grade and 7th grade. http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=95523&highlight=easy+grammar http://www.welltrainedmind.com/forums/showthread.php?t=95656&highlight=easy+grammar
Brindee
You can check out this site for Rod & Staff Remedial English/Grammar work. It looks great to me. It must be fairly new, I don't remember seeing it until very recently! Good prices as well! http://www.rodandstaffbooks.com/list/Rod_and_Staff_Remedial_English/ ETA: My dd struggled with the Level 5 this year (age 11 then), so, now that your question brought these to my attention, I think I am going to get the remedial grades 3-5 set (they say it can be used through 8th grade) for my dd to do this summer! Cool, thanks for asking your question! :) Edited April 28, 2009 by Brindee

Ellie
If you want only grammar, then you're looking at something like Easy Grammar (my favorite) or Winston Grammar, or Analytical Grammar. Texts like those from BJUP, ABeka and R&S are more comprehensive, including composition and other things along with the grammar.
Jen+4dc
Do you know what, besides grammar and composition, that Rod and Staff includes? Mom2girls: thanks for the link, it refers to the sale but I can't find anywhere to click on the page to actually purchase the older closeout versions. Am I missing something? Thanks! Oakblossoms
My oldest is an Aspie. We haven't done any grammar due to focusing on other schooling issues. We will be doing First Language Lessons 3 this upcoming year. If he does well, he can just speed through it and move on to FLL 4. We have learned to not label a book with grade level. It's just the book level, if that makes sense. We tried Easy Grammar, but it didn't go over well.

Jen+4dc
If I choose Easy Grammar can I just start them in their individual grade levels? Will this be way over their heads since they don't really know any grammar? Would the older 5/6 teacher workbook work as a nonconsumable (if I want to do grammar together with both dc for awhile)? Or, should I try and get 2 of them (at $8/each it's harder to go wrong)? Can anyone tell me a little more about R&S? What, besides composition, does the grammar program have? If WWE logic doesn't come out soon I will need a writing program anyway,.......... Thanks for all the great suggestions!
Mom2GirlsTX
You could easily use Easy Grammar 5/6 with both of them and they could share a book, but you would have to photocopy the page. If that is not a big deal, then one book would do it, if not, just buy two books. And again, 5/6 could easily be taught to a 7th or 8th grader, or a 4th grader... It introduces prepositions first and then explains one concept at a time. Easy Grammar is easily implemented by children who have not had any exposure to Grammar in school. At least here where I'm at, most public schools don't teach grammar till 7th grade. R&S is an excellent program, but my children found it much to dry.... If I choose Easy Grammar can I just start them in their individual grade levels? Will this be way over their heads since they don't really know any grammar? Matryoshka
I'm using Easy Grammar 6 (the old 5/6, they made a new 5) with my 5th grade twins this year. I just bought the Teacher's Manual and had the spine cut off and put it in a binder. Then I just photocopy 2 of each page I want them to do. This keeps the cost down and also allows me to skip pages if I see they've got it (I am compuslively unable to skip pages if they're all nice and bound in a workbook :tongue_smilie:)
Jen+4dc
I'm going to try the less expensive old Easy Grammar 1st;). If that isn't a good fit we'll give R&S a try. If that doesn't work,...well, we'll keep moving down the list.......:D Thank you, Jen

skaterbabs
We use these http://www.sfreading.com/resources/ghb.html They're Scot Foresman's grammar workbooks. I would suggest downloading all the levels if you think you may possibly need them; about six months ago the page had vanished. :p We've used it for a year now and it's very well laid out with a lot of writing practice and applying what is learned. Oh, and it's FREE. ;)
