Kathie in VA
Since my dh was sent on travel to Germany, (and this never happens!) I got to go and meet him here. Oh, btw, this is my first trip out of the US! Actually I felt like I was already in a different world as soon as I got past airport security ... I suddenly heard more other languages then English. I was kinda worried, I'm only on lesson 3 of Rosetta Stone-German! So I know very little German, but so far everyone speaks English also! So I've been here for about 10hrs and so far so good. There's many more bikes in use here, for commuting, then back in VA, USA. City streets seem to be similar everywhere ... merchandise outside to try to capture attention... but here there seems to be more people that just stand around talking on the sidewalk.. and these are adults, not teens. The clothing styles are very similar to home also. But it's clear I'm not in VA as I look at the cars ... mostly VW and BMW. Well time to try this soup before the dinner shows up. Auf Wie... okay I remember it but I can't spell 'Good Bye' in German. It sounds like "our feet are in! :D
yslek
Cool! I'm mildly jealous. (I grew up in Germany and haven't been back to visit since I was 17.) Lately I've really been missing German bread. If you have the chance to get some fresh brötchen some morning, I highly recommend it. ;) Oh, and Spaghetti Eis is a fun treat. (Ice Cream that looks like spaghetti...kind of silly, but fun, especially if your dc are with you. :)) Hmmm...and chocolate. :D Hope you have a fabulous visit! Kathie in VA
Thanks for the suggestions. I did get a chance to have some of the bread ... I found a bakery.. and yes it's very good here. Nope, no kids with us, it's also our anniversary so we are on our own. ;)
Friederike in Persia
Why don't you get off the board for a while and look at some more of Germany?!!!!:001_smile:
Kathie in VA
Good point, but right now I'm eating ... alone. I'm still waiting for my dh to show up. I have a great view out two windows so I can 'people watch'. I've been walking these streets all day.
asta
Don't worry about the big words - go with the useful ones! Bitte ein Bier (a beer, please) Noch en mal (the ch is a "k" sound) (means: "another one" or "one more time") Tschuss! (chooss) (means: Bye! See ya!) Bis Morgen! (see you tomorrow!) Viel fiel? (vee feel?) (how much is this? [in money]) Have an awesome time! asta

Kathie in VA
Hi again. We've been back for weeks but I forgot to write a follow up post. :glare: We had a great time. We got to walk all over Munich (again and again). We saw the Science Museum, which was really nice and even got to go across town to and see the King Tut exhibit! (out first time). That was so neat. Oh, and we rented a car for a day and drove down to see the ... um... the castle that Disney got its ideas from. Very nice. Auf Wiedersehn, Yep, that bread was really good! Oh and I did get to try the Spaghetti Eis! Now that was interesting! Looks like spaghetti with tomato sauce and cheese but was made of ice cream (which looked like it came out of a playdoe hair thing! ;) ), topped with strawberry sauce and chopped nuts! Thanks for idea!! I love Munich...you must go experience the Hofbrau house..you will not be disappointed! Kasespaztle there is really yummy! Also there's a Hard Rock across the street if you want a Hard Rock shirt with Munich on it...my kids always want those. :D There is also great shopping in the markplatz...H&M, C&A and then there's the really high end stores...fun, fun!!! Get some spaghetti eis while your there...it's awesome. Wish I was closer.. I'm at least 4 to 5 hours away. hmm, even my dh says thanks on the Hofbrau house idea! We had a great time there. You could have warned me that each beer came in a huge mug! Now that was funny! Oh, we also got to try another place, the Augustine Keller (or something). We met some young guy there and mentioned that we were also at the Hofbrou House and oh... what a face! He did not like that place. Definite rivalry going on there! So we got to hear all about how this one is better.... too funny. Anyway, thanks to all for chatting when I needed it and for all the great advice! TXMomof4
I'm glad you had a great time. We were there in December (the kids and my parents, my brother and sil). We went to Neuschwanstein (the disney castle) and it was colder than cold the day we went. A few days ago my dd was looking at a book about castles and forts and that castle is in it. My ds looked at the picture and said "That's where I went to the bathroom and washed my hands!" There was warm water there so he kept washing his hands over and over. What a memory to have! Carol in Cal.
I'm in Wiesbaden! We moved here two months ago. Are you near me? jeri It was at Drei Lillian. A French restaurent with menus written in German. Even our German companion had trouble telling us what we were ordering in English. It didn't matter, though; everything was absolutely fantastic. ChrisN in NY
My mother was born in Germany, grew up there, moved to the US when she was 15. We all went back for a family trip when I was 16, spent 5 or 6 weeks all over the country (back when there was an Iron Curtain). Dh was in Germany with the Army for 18 months before we were married. I SO want to take a trip to Germany. ... but I'm so glad you had such a great time!
