MomOfOneFunOne
I thought I understood about that but evidently I dont'. My daughter's math teacher is in New Delhi, India. So, we wanted to look-up New Delhi and see about it and see what time it is there. When we look it up, it says that at 2.34 pm Sunday here it's 1.04 am Monday there. I guess I never realized that the minutes would be different. I was expecting it to be 2.34 pm here and 12.34 am there. How does it work with the minutes in India? When I look at the world clock, the entire world is only different by hours so that here it's 2.34 pm Sunday but everywhere that it's different, it's still Something:34, am or pm, Sunday or Monday but not an additional 30 minutes. What's up with India?
Renee in NC
That's weird! I tried an online calculator and got the same thing. Makes no sense to me!
MomOfOneFunOne
I've looked at several sites and IST (Indian Standard Time) is GMT + 5.5. What I can't find is why! ANd I don't know why I just HAVE to know! :tongue_smilie:
mazakaal
There are some countries that have their time on the 1/2 hour. Phone books in the US used to have good time zone maps in them. You could check in there, in the first few pages.
pqr
Some areas of the world a nation may decide to set her own time. India is GMT plus 5.5 hours. I think they are simply splitting the difference between the two zones that people would expect them to fall into.
mazakaal
Here's a link to a good map of time zones. http://www.mapsofworld.com/time-zone-map/world.htm
Colleen in NS
Newfoundland, Canada is 30 minutes behind the rest of us here in Atlantic Canada. I think some places in the world (even in the States - Arizona is one, I think, and maybe Indiana?) just don't follow the time zone/daylight savings idea the same as a lot of other places. keptwoman
South Australia is 30 mins behind Victoria and New South Wales.

Kathy in MD
....I think some places in the world (even in the States - Arizona is one, I think, and maybe Indiana?) just don't follow the time zone/daylight savings idea the same as a lot of other places. FYI Just a few years ago Indiana started following Daylight Savings Times. Prior to that they, like AZ, just stayed on Standard Time year round. However there were a few corners where they followed the time zone of their nearest major city, which was located in a different state. Alice
Nepal time is 15 minutes ahead of India time zone, which I think I read was done to emphasize their difference from India. So they are 9.45 ahead of Washinton DC. That was fun to try and remember when I went there. :)

And I just found out last year (thanks to SOTW 4) why time zones were implemented - it wasn't something I'd ever thought about before.
