S in Canada
Hi there There is reference in the Home instructors guides for additional materials. These appear to be manipulatives "to have". I was going to order a base 10 set but before I do I must ask.... Is it imperative? Is there anything else that I really need to have? This is for 2A 2B but am willing to purchase ahead if I might require other manipulatives down the road. TIA
AudreyTN
We are working through 2A right now, and have finished all of level 1. As far as blocks go, we use the linking cubes that are 1cm x 1cm and they weight 1g. (I figured that would cut my cost somewhere. :)) We make 10's when we need 10's. I use a square piece of construction paper to represent 100s. A meter stick would be helpful. A regular ruler. I do need to get a balance scale. Other than flash cards, that is all I can think of right now.
kgreenaz
Tia - go to singaporemath.com and enter the forums. They will tell you exactly what manipulatives you need. We just started Singapore and LOVE it! I will say that I adore, adore, adore the MathUSee blocks so we bought those. I think that they are invaluable. I like how they have them in increments from 1-10 and not just ones, tens, and hundreds. Very handy. Plus you can sell them for almost as much as you pay for them if you take care of them. The singaporemath forum is really helpful! Kim

And, if you don't take care of them, the little green units blocks can be worn on your fingers and thumbs so you can impersonate a tree frog, they have many uses! In the Rain
We use our Base 10 blocks to illustrate some problems, and also to play games. Dd has a pretty solid grasp of place value and adding large numbers with regrouping. I attribute this to working with the blocks.
FO4UR
I use cuisenairre rods extensively with SM. I don't know how else I would teach number bonds.;):tongue_smilie: I own a base ten set, and it sits on the shelf....it is used for building towers and battelships LOL, and I keep it in hopes that it will someday be used for math..... Corraleno
I also use cuisenaire rods, but I mix and match Singapore & Miquon with DD6. She'd probably be fine without them, she's a very verbal/logical learner, but I feel like the rods help *me* explain things. I used base 10 blocks a lot with DS11, not just to demonstrate concepts but for him to actually work the problems. He's a visual/spatial learner, and doing math by writing abstract symbols on paper was really frustrating for him. I honestly don't think he could learn math without manipulatives.
