rhrice3
Ladies, Have any of you used their history, especially honors US with gov't, for high school? I ordered the syllabus and tests for Hakim's history for my 8th grader next year and they sent me a catalog. It looks like they offer some scheduling suggestions along with tests. I was wondering about their literature, as well. We have used Sonlight for high school so far, and although I love it, I feel like my son is just reading all those books as fast as he can to keep up with the IG schedule. He likes a schedule, but Sonlight's for high school is just getting a little daunting for us, mostly me. I was wondering if he did more reading for depth and just a few extra books on the side, if this would not be a better approach for college. I appreciate any and all advice. Thanks in advance ReneeR I would appreciate any advice.

Thanks in advance ReneeR I got on Hewitt's Yahoo group, which has been some help, but it doesn't look like the ladies who use this (are enrolled) actually are on that group or else they just don't want to reply to my post. I asked a question and haven't gotten any replies. I also have used Sonlight and yes, the high school cores give you way too much information. I never know what to take out or how to get all the IG reading ALSO into our day. My ds did core 300 last year with that huge DK book. At 1950, I had to go to our library and get something a bit more manageable. He did 530 this year and did love the books and the notes, but then again, that was written by Amy. Mr. H does tend to go on and on sometimes. :D But, back to your question. Your last statement about more reading in depth. I like that. I am going to do things different with my dd. She is going into 8/9th (I say it that way as I don't think she's really ready for completely 9th grade work). I am just about to purchase Hewitt's LL for 8th grade. I have the American Lit I and can see that she would appreciate it more the following year. We will do BJP Cultural Geography along with the lit from Hewitt. I may enroll her for 9th grade toward the end of this year. Depends on her attitude and if I feel she still needs extra help in getting going with her wriitng. And did I say, her attitude? :glare: Good luck in your decision. This probably didn't help much, but maybe there is something in here that struck a chord. kloumc
I can HIGHLY recommend using the Honors American History with Hewitt. We chose this option last year for our high school junior and were GREATLY pleased! This particular Honors History was based on Clarence Carson's Basic History of the United States. We enrolled in the program just for that course. She was given a syllabus, which offered several choices for the literature selections and the required projects. She had to write several papers which were all graded by someone with a masters in history. He gave both encouraging and constructive feedback. There were also essay tests at the end of each quarter, which were graded by Hewitt's faculty. My daughter wants to major in history in college and she needed a course that stretched her more than I was able to do. Hewitt provided such an opportunity for a mere $300/year. It was well worth the money, IMHO.

I already have the application filled out...:D Thanks again!
Frontier Mom
Though I haven't used Hewitt, I have been so impressed with them. I started out with one plan, but decided I wanted to use LL Am. Lit for my oldest and LL 7 for my next ds. When I got their catalog, I was so impressed that I completely changed my mind and ordered their State History and Health suggested for 9th grade. I also ordered a bible curriculum from them and, when I called with a few questions, they were so nice and helpful. I am hoping I am as impressed with them into the year as I have been so far. All their recommendations just look great. I am not doing any enrollment at this point but probably will in the future. I am most impressed with their catalog and suggestions.
