LadyAberlin
I just purchased something used and they reek with smoke. Is there anything I can do to get the smell out? Thanks
OnTheBrink
Good luck. I bought a book used once and it was horribly smoky smelling. I tried all sorts of things, and the bottom line was, the stupid book smelled like smoke no matter what. Can you return it?
LadyAberlin
No I won't do that to her. She already mailed the book and then it came back to her and so she mailed it priority. She was out quite a bit of postage. I should have asked and will from now on. I don't think smokers realize how much their things smell. I have the book sitting outside airing out right now. mom2jjka
I would set it outside, directly in the sun and fresh air. (Unfortunately, it will fade the cover - though)
mom4him
I don't know if it would work or not but possibly if you would sprinkle baking soda throughout the pages. I used soda to get the new car smell out of our car last summer and it worked really quickly.
Shenan
I have had some luck with dryer sheets! Place the dryer sheet in the book and close it up in a ziploc bag or box/small rubbermaid container. OR you can just lay the sheet in the box/container with the book. Check on it in a few days and see if you need another dryer sheet or to see if the book smells better enough to use. I don't think the dryer sheet really gets rid of the smell. I think it just covers the smoke smell enough to make it tolerable for me to use. :D I used 4 sheets once for a really, really, really bad smelling book. It took over 2 weeks before it was tolerable for me to use. HTH,
3littlekeets
Put the books in a plastic box with charcoal. Works like a charm for me :-)
WTMCassandra
I set the book out on a worktable with pages fanned for a couple of weeks.
WTMCassandra
I set the book out on a worktable in the garage with pages fanned for a couple of weeks.
Desert Rat
If you don't have charcoal, I use Nag Champa incense sticks. Works great!
eaglei
I have put book standing up with pages fanned and sprayed with Lysol! (Not so close to get the book wet, but enough for the mist to reach) . . .
Retired
sealed garbage bag with kitty litter about 24-48 hours, seems to get the job done
Ohdanigirl
Dryer sheets work well. Also try wiping it down with a cloth that as a little lemon on it. Lemon really does cut through stuff. Everyone in our extended family smokes andI can't stand the smell, so I do these things. It takes time and you may have to repeat it. Good luck! LadyAberlin
So do you think that if I wipe it down with lemon spray it with Lysol, and put it in a bag of charcoal, kitty litter, baking soda and dryer sheets and place it in the sun it won't smell like kitty liter anymore? LOL it might explode. Thanks everyone. I've got some experimenting to do:lol:
