Carmen_and_Company
Okay, call me dense as I cannot figure out why the author of AG wants children marking the DO's & IO's as nouns with an "N", especially after teaching my dd about direct (DO) & indirect objects (IO). Would marking the nouns with an N/DO (noun/direct object) or N/IO (noun/indirect object) cause issues in later units? Storm is confused because she wants to mark with DO & IO, not N. Thanks, C Edited April 20, 2009 by Carmen_and_Company
Sunshine State Sue
I had this same question when we started AG after Shurley. Ds was used to marking IO/DO/SN/OP etc. It was explained to me that IO/DO/SN/OP etc. would become clear from the diagramming that the student would do. In later lessons, they will choose certain words out of the sentences and the student will have to identify the job the word is doing. Between the diagramming and identifying the job, ds has had no problem at all identifying the job the noun is doing. HTH!

Thanks, C The parsing tells you the parts of speech (except for predicate adjectives, we do mark those differently). The diagrams are what tell you the jobs. If your dd wants to mark them the other way, that's fine. I don't think it'll cause too much confusion later. If it does, then start doing it our way. It's not a big deal. blessings,
Carmen_and_Company
Thanks, I'll leave well alone for now, and if Storm hits a wall later on, we'll revert back to how AG presents the other functions of nouns as written.
