mom4him
How many do school year around? What does your schedule look like? In the past we have had school yr around, doing a 4 day wk, taking 1 wk off in June for VBS, 3 wks off in July/Aug, days needed for canning are off, the week of Thanksgiving, 2 wks at Christmas, around one at Easter. I am starting a trial of 5 day week this week and see how we do.
DB in NJ
Some years we go year-round; others we take the summer off. It all depends on how productive I feel we've been during the school year, and where we are, life-wise. This school year, we've done 4 days a week with the following breaks: 1 week off in October for family visit 1 week off in November for Thanksgiving 2 weeks off in December for Christmas 2 weeks off in January due to illness (1 kid fell off a horse & had a concussion; 1 kid had pneumonia) 1 week off in March for family visit The only time off I had actually PLANNED on were the week in October and the 2 weeks in December. The week for Thanksgiving was only supposed to be 3 days. :glare: We'll be going down the shore in June and September, but other than that, we'll be doing math, grammar, and reading all summer long. I'm also working with my niece and nephew now, which has really thrown a monkey wrench into my other plans. Such is life :)
Sasharowan
We go year round (although if you ask the kids they do too much) WE'll take 2-3 weeks off end of May for vacation to in-laws and then 2-3 end of July while I plan next year. They also got 3-4 weeks off for Christmas break along with miscellaneous weeks of throughout the year when we had company. Mostly I don't plan the weeks off, just take them as stuff comes up. We go camping when we really need a break.
K&Rs Mom
We do year-round, 4 days a week (not always the same 4), and taking time off as needed. I think we end up with more than 40 weeks total, but I like the flexibility. I don't plan particular weeks off, but something comes up at least every couple of months, sometimes more often. lotsofpumpkins
We school 4 days a week year-round too. It's supposed to be Mon-Thurs, but sometimes something comes up on one of those days so we school on Friday instead. We take off for Thanksgiving/Christmas travel. We'll take off some time for a vacation too. We don't plan the vacation time too far in advance. We just take off as we need to.
Ellie
We took off Thanksgiving through about the middle of January; a couple of weeks in the spring around Easter, a couple of weeks or so in late August/early September, and any other time we (meaning I) needed it, for vacations or mental health. :-) Otherwise, we kept our same schedule: Monday & Tuesday, official school; Wednesday, library; Thursday, field trip; Friday, clean house/park day once a month. I "promoted" dc in the fall, for the sake of keeping Sunday school teachers and grandparents happy, but really, we just did our stuff and moved on to the next thing when we either finished or got tired of something. Melissa in Australia
we just did our stuff and moved on to the next thing when we either finished or got tired of something. we do this as well. the only thing that I keep to grade level is History. the new school year start with the next history year. they just continue on with the next book whenever they finish off the last one. makes working out an actual grade slightly difficult. they get ahead in some subjects, and move slower in other subjects. Shelly in the Country
We school year-round, 5 days per week. Our school year rolls over in June. We do 180 days of school per year and just take time off when we need it. Kids (or mom) gets sick; we take a week off. The house is looking kinda messy; a week off to clean. Grandparents coming for a visit; another week off. We also take off for holidays. I use Homeschool Tracker and keep track of our school days. We just spread out our breaks over the year but keep to a 180 day school year.
eternalknot
We school year-round, 4 days a week. Our year is broken down in to 3 Terms of 4 months each. My job requires me to sit on-call in another state for 21 days/month, 3 months of every year (October, February, June) so those are our "school lite" months -- just the basics (math, latin and independent reading). The readings are a literary introduction and overview of what we'll cover in history that term or year. Term 1 is October/November/December/January. It is our "light-weight" term because we break often! We do the bulk of our research/readings and discussions, and tie in the crafty/arty/sciency stuff ... things that are easier to take breaks from, but easily pick back up. October is "school lite". Then we break for the week of Thanksgiving through the end of St. Nicholas Day, and again for the week of Christmas through the end of the New Year week. We take a final mini-break the week of MLK Day. We travel during each of those breaks. Term 2 is February/March/April/May. February is our "school lite" month; March through May we buckle down into a more normal looking school schedule ... all subjects daily, at a deeper depth than in Term 1. Term 3 is June/July/August/September. June is our "school lite" month; July through September we continue in-depth studies begun in Term 2. We break for all of our birthdays, and are liberal with the field trips. This schedule lacks an extended period of downtime, but it frees up our afternoons throughout the year - which my son and I greatly prefer. I stagger the start dates of our various curricula, giving each subject its own rotation (October is new history and language arts, February is new math, June is new latin, et cetera). We grade promote every Fall, to keep aligned with same-aged peers in other schools.
TxMama
We school year-round, 4 days a week. Our year is broken down in to 3 Terms of 4 months each. We do something similar. 4 days a week until the kids work independantly then they have a lighter 5th day. Instead of 3 terms of 4 months. We do 4 terms of 3 months. Each term the goal is to do school at least 9 weeks which gives of 4 weeks that we can break. We break for vacations, visits from family, birthdays, illnesses, etc. I don't preplan most breaks. Mesa
We scool year round as well. I usually do a 4 day week but I have been trying the 5 day week, and doing 3 weeks on 1 week off schedule. It isnt working. After a full week off it's too easy to want to take another. So we are now back to a 4 day week. M-TH and Fridays are our library and cleaning day.
