Homeschooling SLP
Hi everyone. I am new to posting, but have been reading the threads off and on for some time. I have 2 dds, on who will be in the 6th grade next year and one you will be in the 8th. Both are finishing Latina Christiana II this year. This has been a four year struggle for us to go from Prima Latina to Latina Christiana II. Now, the delimna..where to next? Is there a good next step that would bridge them to Henle Latin I later on? I don't want something that will be really weighty for my 8th grader as she will have a heavily loaded year already. Thanks so much for any advice! Alphabetika
Memoria Press just came out with First Form Latin, which I believe is supposed to do just what you're trying to do - be a bridge. I just saw it in their catalogue the other day, so I don't even know if anyone has used it yet.
profmom
After LCII, I think they would go into Second Form, which is being beta tested this coming year. (You may be able to get into the group.) Memoria Press also has online classes for middle school Latin using Henle at 1/2 the high school pace. If you know you want to go into Henle, either of these would be a good choice. (The "Form" series is new, and after Fourth Form, they would go into Henle II.) I like Latin Alive for that age, but recently Beth in Central Texas posted concerns abouut errors in the TM. If they will post an errata soon, I think I will be fine with continuing. They'll have go-along DVDs soon. This series will cover all of Wheelock's grammar in 3 years. HTH! Edited April 18, 2009 by profmom
wimseycat
I would second the Latin Alive recommendation. My DS is using is right now. I only wish we had the DVD's. You might be able to use it for both of them at the same time. The first part of the book is review. Annika

I'd have them both move into Henle I after finishing LCII. I would definitely use the Memoria Press guide w/your 6th gr., and try it out w/your 8th gr. My dd is in 8th gr. this year, and has used Henle w/the MP guides. She has done extremely well with this combination. It does move at a slower pace, but you can combine/condense the daily lesson plans if it is too slow for your 8th gr. Much of the beginning lessons of Henle I will be review for your dc, as they have been familiarized with much of the vocabulary/grammar they will encounter in those early lessons. Homeschooling SLP
Thanks for the advice from all. I did not know exactly where Henle I picked up, so knowing that it begins with some review of what has previously been learned in Latina Christiana will definitely aid in the decision.
