petepie2
For those using God's Design for Science, do you plan to go through it twice (assuming you start in the 1st grade)? I see that it follows the WTM cycle and it's supposed to be appropriate for 1st-8th grade. Do you feel there is enough "new" stuff for the second time around? Or on the other hand, if you only use it for 1st-4th, do you think you would miss out on the "meat" of the curriculum? I'm hoping to get a look at these books when we visit the creation museum the summer..... Thanks in advance!
luv4bugs
Good question... I'm right with you so I have no answer!! From what I understand though we are going to go through it 'lightly' the first time around and then use it again on a deeper level. I'm anxious to know if that is the best plan or not! I hope you have a great time at the museum. Sounds like a great place!!
Lovedtodeath
Well, I think there is too much to do in one year. I don't think 2 hours for 36 weeks would get us through all 3 books for each subject area. So, my plan is to only do one book a year for the grammar stage and do the others in the logic stage. 3byzaz
I just received them and haven't used them yet. However, I think the way you can do them again is because younger ones would only be using the 'blue' beginner box. Then, there is a middle one and advanced one. The advanced is pretty meaty! So, it would be like a history cycle...more later when they are older. These look so awesome by the way! I can't wait to use them!
dani3boys
so I won't have a chance to reuse them. The difference between the three levels is very evident. The challenging part of the lesson goes into great detail! I think it would be a great program to go through more than once. You could build upon the previous knowledge. We are in GDF Plants, and have enjoyed it very much.
Zoo Keeper
I've been going through them with two of my boys, K and 1st. Both my boys have loved it, and I have found it easy to teach. But there has been many lessons I have had to simplify or skip. Too much info for my little guys to process right now. We plan on going through the books twice, and I am glad there is still enough meat there for them to work with later. We already supplement with many other reference/picture books to their level, and I anticipate that we will do the same with more materials when they go through the books a second time. BTW, I have the older b&w set. Are you all referring to the new color editions? I didn't realize that they contained more helps and information. petepie2
Yea!! I'm so glad to read these responses. I was hoping that this curriculum could be used twice. The multi-age aspect is really nice, and having the WTM science cycle is an added bonus in my book. Thanks to everyone! :D
liltrees
:confused:I'm glad you posted the question. I've considered using God's Design for science next year and was curious about the same thing. So, for those of you that had to skip over, etc. were you having to skip the beginner sections? Are they too difficult for 7yo and 5yo? So, for those of you that had to skip over, etc. were you having to skip the beginner sections? Are they too difficult for 7yo and 5yo? The Life series I would guess would be fine. In the Earth series it would be hit and miss. In the Weather book they have some really non-concrete sections and a lot of proper terminology, but the whole book isn't that way. My guess is the Chemistry and Physics books continue to sometimes be rather theoretical, but I think that might be a problem with any program. I think you could re-do them, and add maybe a picture book on the topic the second time around, just for the older child. If I were starting out with GD that is what I would do. petepie2
I just noticed that the Life series and the Heaven and Earth series are for 1st-8th......the other two years, Physical World and Chemistry & Ecology are for 3rd-8th.... Linda (Australia)
You certainly could with the 'Life' and 'Heaven and Earth' sets. The Chemistry and Physical World sets are really designed for older students, although, if you tweak it and cover only the basics, this would be fine. We love these books, and have just begun again back at the beginning - the absolutely favourite title in our family is the Animal Kingdom - they couldn't wait to do that one again! My 3rd grades really struggled with the Chemistry book - just over her head. Personally, with little ones, I think I'd now do the Life set, the Heaven and Earth, and then begin again, leaving the Chemistry and Physical World sets for when they are older. This then gives you six years of science, or more if you only cover 2 books per year instead of 3 in the early grades.
