Natalija
Dd is finishing R&S English 8 and this year and I planned to stop with R&S there. I was wondering if anyone used CLE LA in high school at all? Her retention is not all that great so she needs to keep up with grammar in some way through HS but something that won't take as much time as R&S. I saw AG as a review but am wondering about CLE now. She is doing the CLE Reading and doing well. I saw the CLE diagnostic tests so I can give her that to test with. Dd 11 is in R&S English 6 and I am thinking of switching her to CLE LA in the fall also. Ic an do the test with her too, but wondering if, generally, one would go into CLE LA 7 after R&S 6? She is doing CLE Math (the best math curriculum for her we have found!) and CLE Reading. Turns out grammar is their grades with R&S is not as high as I'd like to see. They both need review for retention. Thanks so much! Have a blessed day! Natalija
mamaof2andtwins
Since the diagnostic tests are readily available, I would just give the test and see where they place. The high school grammar portion is much more abbreviated than the language arts program that goes through 8th grade as it is only 5 light units of grammar. I think that is appropriate for high school. I took a look at a lot of public and private high school English sylllabi and found that many, if not most, drop all grammar in high school in favor of literature and writing. Like you, I feel that my son still needs a little grammar still, so we have decided to continue with CLE. Jennie
April in WA
Jennie, Can I ask what level of CLE LA your 15 year old is doing? I am giving thoughts to the 9th and 10th grade English I and 11th grade English II. Are you using either of these currently? Thanks, April Edwards
mamaof2andtwins
April, He is currently doing the 800 level of language arts because it took him 2 years to do the 700 level. Next year, as a 10th grader, he will do CLE English 1 plus I have a writing program that I am doing, and our history is lit. based. So, yes, he will also do English II as an 11th grader. I don't see this as being a problem for him. He is not doing English 1 currently, but I did purchase it already. Let me know if you want me to look something up. MIch elle
Dd 11 is in R&S English 6 and I am thinking of switching her to CLE LA in the fall also. Ic an do the test with her too, but wondering if, generally, one would go into CLE LA 7 after R&S 6? ...from R&S English 6 to CLE LA 7 this fall. R&S covers much the same material as CLE LA 6 so I think going to LA 7 should be fine. That's my plan so far.
MIch elle
I took a look at a lot of public and private high school English sylllabi and found that many, if not most, drop all grammar in high school in favor of literature and writing. At my ds's private high school they use the Holt Handbook and they covered much of what's in R&S English 7 (w/o diagramming) in grade 9 this year. I'm glad he finished R&S English 7. I think CLE LA will be better than R&S English because of the built in review as well as less focus on diagramming and more on what's covered on std. tests (usage, punctuation, labeling parts of speech, etc.). This is based on review of CLE LA 7 samples only; we haven't used it yet.
April in WA
Jennie, Thanks for the quick reply. So your son will do both semesters of English I in 10th grade along with a full-year writing program? Will that be your complete LA program or will you have any literature analysis in there? Thanks, April
mamaof2andtwins
April, I am going to do the English and Literature 1 next year along with Writer's Jungle for my son. That should do it for his English credit. I also want him to have some full length literature, but I will incorporate them with history. I am not sure how to break that down credit wise. Natalija
I am confused. I looked on the CLE website at the LA page. It shows Sunrise LightUnits to 8th grade and then nothing til 12th grade. What did you mean by English I and English II? In what curriculum? I didn't realize it stopped at 8th...or does it? Actually, I think I saw samples for 9th grade LA on the CLE yahoo group....or maybe I am mistaken. Dd does need to focus on Writing and Lit but I don't want her to forget all the grammar she ahs learned all these years! And without review, she will! Thanks for any clarification! MIch elle
CLE LA includes English, spelling and penmanship. CLE English is only English in grades 9 & up. CLE English I is 9th grade; English 2 is 10th grade.
mamaof2andtwins
That's right. CLE language arts finishes in 8th grade and then becomes English I and English II. They are all Sunrise Editions though. The high school English drops spelling and penmanship. It is grammar in LU 1-3 and then a LU on an essay and one on giving a speech. The Literature 1 is also Sunrise Lightunits set up in the same fashion as the CLE reading in the lower grades. Does that help? Let me know if you need further clarification.
