SeekingSimplicity
Is there a secular ( and cheap :tongue_smilie: ) am hist resource that covers indians and colonial times thru modern times? For a 4th grader? I've looked at WP AS1 and 2, but we've got a lot going on this next year, so I'm wanting to keep the history portion of our studies light. dragons in the flower bed
You could use A Young People's History of the United States, Volume Two, by Howard Zinn if you want a single narrative history to read aloud, or U.S. History Through Children's Literature by Wanda J. Miller if you want to use something more curriculumish.

I made one for my son and posted it on my site for free. You can check it out via my signature. :) My plan is fairly heavy, but since it is totally tweakable you can do a light version very easily. I think a couple/few moms here on this board have used it too. I'm also working on a 2nd year at the request of a mom who used the 1st year and because I've decided that's what I want to use for my son when he gets older. I decided I don't like the 2nd year of another program I had been planning on using so it will be worth my time. Just a note though about WP's AS1 and AS2...I used AS2 and loved it. It was really manageable and not overwhelming at all. Whoops, sorry - I just re-read your post and saw you mentioned a resource (singular). Durrr... JenninMN
There's the Complete Book of United States History put out by School Specialty. I have it and like it, but I haven't tried it on my ds yet. ;)
kRenee
Check out Build Our Nation, Houghton Mifflin isbn 0-618-20660-4 It is the textbook that Calvert uses. Although I didn't end up using it, what I read of it I really liked. It is a textbook, but it's easy to read. I think the perfect age is 4th or 5th grade. The book is a little too young for an advanced 6th grader. We did use Across the Centuries, another Calvert book. It reminded me of the story-like quality of SOTW but in a more textbook form. If you like the book I would be happy to sell you mine. Karen

SeekingSimplicity
Thanks for all the suggestions. I'm going to check them all out. Just out of curiosity, what does SotW vol 3 and 4 cover?
