Maranatha_Academy
Hello ladies, I did MFW 1st grade last year with my then 1st grader and did well with it. I am considering using it with my soon to be 1st grader. The problem is that she is a more reluctant reader than my other dd, so I am second guessing if MFW 1st grade will work for her. I tried MFW K and it didn't work out so I have just been doing Phonic Pathways with her. Teaching my first DD to read was such a breeze but with my soon to be 1st grader it has been the opposite! Any feedback on this will be greatly appreciated! Lori in MS
I had a relunctant reader and the pace of 1st was too fast for him. I recommend doing Explode the code 1-3 and Phonics Pathways through the long vowel words before you begin MFW (or at least before you start the new material, days 1-18 or so is review from K). Then I continued with PP until the end of the book for extra practice.
Maranatha_Academy
Thanks Lori, Your suggestion sounds great without having to drop MFW 1 altogether, it was such a memorable year with my other dd. Thanks! :)
Mrs. Lilac
I just have to say- I'm not a big online/computer games person when it comes to my kiddos, but I swear by http://www.starfall.com as far as learning to read! They start with ABCs and go through all the phonics.....interactive games, interactive readers....it is AWESOME! Maybe have your little reluctant reader "play" with that for a bit....it's so much fun that it takes the pressure off, but they learn SO much! Good luck! :)
dhudson
I find that sometimes kids take giant leaps during the summer break and just allowing them to "play" educational games sometimes does the trick. At that age, I loaded my kids up with leapster games and computer games and just fun games and by the middle of the summer, it seemed like they took a leap and we were able to move on to our regular curriculum in the fall. Just a thought!
Maranatha_Academy
Yes thats true, maybe ill give it a rest and let her "play". I hope by the end of summer we can pick up PP and MFW 1 and she will be ready. I am a bit relaxed but I panic when I compare where one was at this stage versus where my dd is now and they dont match up :( Thanks again
dhudson
The older my kids get the more I realize that I can't compare them - even though two of mine are twins. ;) They learn at different levels and stages and they all have their strengths and weaknesses and that's okay and normal.
