WinterPromise Children Around The World--For those who have used it....

Recommended Posts

Children of Many Lands

I love the narrative style of this book. It makes a great spine for a year's geography study, or just as a read-aloud.

Travel Diary

My kids benefited from these pages. They still add to their geography notebooks occasionally.

Biography of Oil, Biography of Bananas, etc.

These books are fascinating! Well-worth including in any homeschool resource library.

Well Rose, since you are the only one on here who has responded, that has actually used the program, I hope you can answer a few more questions for me :001_smile:!

So, would you say the Travel Diary can be used independently of CAW? Do you think I could fit it into a culture/country study using ECC?

Also, could the “Travel with Me” Maps used in CAW be used independently?

Thanks so much for your help!

It makes me feel useful. :001_smile:

Yep, but, you'd want to make sure you were hitting, in your studies, the countries the Travel Diary covers. CoML is the best way to do this, but you could, say, use the Travel Diary European nations while doing a general study of Europe.

Also, could the “Travel with Me†Maps used in CAW be used independently?

I can't think of any problem with this, as long as you keep in mind that the stickers won't necessarily cover all the most important landmarks, but rather those that are addressed in Children of Many Lands. Putting the stickers on the map would still be an educational exercise that reinforces geographical knowledge of the region.

I'm not the least bit familiar with MFW or ECC. I really have no idea how that program is structured. I did look at the scope and sequence of it, back when CATW first came out. At that time I made up the following chart.

Terri, sorry to hi-jack, but what is making you lean toward ECC instead of CATW? Just curious.

Oh Carmen, did you have to go and turn my world upside down ! Since I read your question last night before going to bed, I have been wondering why I was leaning towards it too!!!!

Then, today, I ditched both of them for Student of the Word. Tonight I am back to ECC :willy_nilly:!

As I have thought about it, I have come up with some things that have drawn me to MFW over WP. I feel MFW is more doable than WP. But, I do like WP's exclusives, so I wanted to try to add some of those in, along with some of their book suggestions. One of the big draws for me is that MFW already has the science combined with the program. Also, I wasn't looking at doing CATW in WP, but one of their major history themes. I don't really care for the book selections in CATW. I like the idea of doing a year of geography though, so that was another plus for MFW. And, I have a fondness for MFW because I have used 2 other of their programs (K and Adventures).

However, in looking at long term, I don't know if I want to stay with MFW or not. You know some of the spiritual issues I have with a Christian company. Also, I am having trouble figuring out if I want to expose my children to Greek and Roman myths. Plus, there is the talking animal issue, but I think that could easily be worked around in either program. I was looking at Student of the Word because it is Bible based and more flexible as far as resources go. But, I don't trust it as much academically as I do MFW and WP, and I don't think it has as well laid out lesson plans.

So, there you go :D....my indecision in a nutshell!

I think CATW would work great. Just sub the adventure reading and readers with the ALA list from my program. ;)

Hmmmm. I could possibly work on only that portion for you. Do you want to use the library or Amazon? Or, you could skip geography for now and wait until I have mine done multi-level for next year. :D I make sure I pre-read every book and make appropriate notes. (I know I am being pushy, I am trying to be funny, but it doesn't come across very well.)

I understand, I was waffling horribly about WP last year. I just keep my indecision to myself now. I think since I am writing my own secular curriculum, I will probably only buy a few things from WP and not a whole program again. (Maybe Sea and Sky though.)
