Writing Aid or WWE?

I am planning on using TOG next year. I am loving FLL and was planning on starting WWE along with it next year. However, TOG uses Writing Aids with its curriculum so I was wondering if I should just use that or use both? We have never used a writing curriculum although we do copy work and dictation. I will have children in 7th, 5th, 3rd and K, all are very reluctant writers.

Any advice?

I would lean towards WWE and FLL. I think TOG writing is good, but I do think that at times you are going to have to do a lot of hand holding, with no script to help. It isn't as bad as say SL for having lots of creative writing, but it still has some. To me WWE and FLL are just very easily and quickly done, and very developmentally appropriate.

That said I would try to have your 7th grader through most of the stages of WWE this year, maybe by just using the samples in the book? Then have them working on paragraphs in TOG next year (I think that is level 3). Though I would continue with narration and dictation at the same time, just on a lighter schedule to allow room for TOG writing as well.

Because TOG writing generally introduces new material the first half of the year, then just practices it the 2nd half, you will have room to play catch up the 2nd half of the year. Thus hopefully you can move them ahead a couple levels a year.

Thanks Heather! FLL is so easy to use and makes sense to me. I figure WWE would be the same way. I guess I wouldn't even order Writing Aids at first. Thanks!!

Jenn,

Don't you love it when a decision is made?!

Yes WWE is very easy to use, scripted like FLL.
