luckymom
she would place in level 1B - is that possible??? I want to do singapore with her over the summer. Should I just start with 1A and let her move quickly through? She will go into 4th grade in September but I am shocked that she seems behind in this math. Thoughts. Unicorn.
Does R&S 3 cover multiplication? Personally, if she has finished R&S 3, I would work through Sing. 3 over the summer. She should be fine. jmho
Sandy in Indy
Hmmm. I wouldn't assume that because she's finished the third level of another program, she's ready for Singapore 3. I'd give the placement test and start wherever she places. I used Singapore 1A with ds then moved to R&S 1. We're in the homestretch of R&S 2, then I plan to do 1B and possibly 2A before picking up R&S 3. You can find the placement tests here: http://www.singaporemath.com/Placement_Test_s/86.htm Long ago, my very strong math student took the placement test after finishing 6th grade. He placed in Singapore Primary 4A. I was shocked!!! That's where we picked it up, though. He was able to go through 4A/B fairly quickly, once he got the Singapore mindset. He completed Singapore through 6B, then jumped to Algebra.

I would expect to have to go back at least a year if not more; the placement test is accurate. And don't worry about the level.
Sara in WA
The Singapore math levels do not equal grades. Go by the placement test. It's always better to start easy and breeze through a book or two. Singapore does teach math differently, I'm finding. It's best to get a good foundation.
Closeacademy
Another voice saying that Singapore levels do not equal grades. It is advanced. Level 3 is end of 4-5th grade work, Level 4 is 5-6th grade work. Rod and Staff takes things a little bit slower and reviews a lot (that's why I use it with my non-mathy child). Take the placement test and start where they tell you to or even 1/2 a level behind. You may breeze through the first book or two but it is important to figure out how Singapore teaches while it is easy rather than jump in to those harder books. Btw, my mathy child spent 9 months on the material in 3a but only 3 months on 3b just to give you an idea of how things work some times. Good luck.:001_smile:
AudreyTN
My daughter did 1A/B last school year. This year we did 1/2 of BJU 3. A month ago I went back to Singapore and just had her start in 2A. She's moving very quickly, but I didn't want to miss anything. Again, I highly recommend the placement test.
Supertechmom
We are Singapore fans and I always recommend to at least go through the textbooks starting from 1. The way they teach is so different from most programs that it is worth it to make sure they have the "singapore" way. And for those rod diagrams, the challenging word problems are essential to learn that process. Take the tests and start 1/2 level back. It really is advanced. littlemomof3
Im surprised your daughter placed in 1A. My son is 3/4 of the way done with R&S 3 and just by looking at the tests I know he will place in 3. Maybe a few things not taught in THEIR way, but the concept the same. Are you sure? The OP didn't have her dd take the placement test; she just looked at the levels and what is covered (as I understand her posts).
