Ebay sellers: Tips, please...

Recommended Posts

I've been doing some massive decluttering, and I think eBay is the way to go on some of the items. I have some brand new/like new Tupperware, etc. that I've researched on eBay and I know I could do better there than a yard sale.

I've looked at some of the eBay forums, and it is sort of overwhelming for me to wade through all of that. Can you give me some concise, specific things I need to do to get started?

I've never sold anything, but I've bought 75-100 items, I have 100% feedback.

Do you use a listing service?

What is the average amount of time you spend setting up a listing (I realize the first few will take longer)?

Is online postage a hassle? The PO doesn't come to our house. I would need to make trips to the PO anyway.

I have a non-CC PayPal acct right now. Should I just convert that one or open another one with another one of my bank accounts?

Anything else I should be aware of? I'll probably list less than 5 items to start with and see how it goes, but I'd love to make the learning curve shorter.

TIA!

I don't sell a lot anymore, but am getting ready to list some things. I don't use a listing service because dh has helped me make an auction template and has an ftp server that I can use to host photos, but if I didn't have that option, I'd check into how much the listing service would cost. Having good photos, and multiple photos if necessary, is very helpful.

I would have your packaging figured out before you list so you know how much the packages weigh and can calculate what the postage will be. The only online postage I've used is through Paypal, and it's been easy to use. If you have a Staples near you, they ship UPS packages w/o the extra fees that the UPS stores charge - if you have heavier packages, UPS is sometimes less expensive than the USPS.

I'd probably keep your non-cc Paypal account and just create another one for using with Ebay. That way, if you sell things online and not through Ebay (like used curriculum on the boards), you will have an account to accept Paypal that doesn't charge the extra fees.

Auctiva is free and lets you include multiple pictures without ebay charges.

Get a good scale for your packages; remember shipping includes your packaging charges (which can eat into your profits if you don't assess

accurately). OH: if you have a scale, for smaller packages, you can print out the postage online and your delivery person will take them with your mail.

ALWAYS get some kind of delivery confirmation and be prepared to eat some losses for mishandling by the delivery service or unscrupulous buyer (rare). For big packages, FedEx ground is often the cheapest way to go.

Remember, you pay Ebay listing and final value fees, plus paypal, PLUS factor in your time. Lately, it's been less expensive for us to sell at our consignment shops or on Craigslist :-).

Good luck!
