katilac
because he does have emotions, one of his caretakers runs away with him but finally decides that emotions are too painful, he voluntarily returns for 'treatment' and returns the boy to his home. I'm not positive if it's a long story or a novel. The movie "Equilibrium" made me think of it, but the story I'm remembering is not one referenced as an inspiration. Edited to add more details: the boy is fairly young, maybe 7? they (the caregivers) intentionally induce strong emotion, happiness at a new goldfish or distress at missing his parents, so that he laughs and cries for the audience (which he is not aware of). katilac
Definitely not "The Giver." I probably still HAVE the book, but I really don't want to troll through dozens upon dozens of cheap paperbacks from my teen years!

Apiphobic
Maybe it's one of the stories in Isaac Asimov's Tomorrow's Children?
JFSinIL
Sounds Ray Bradburyish to me....I am intrigued and hope someone comes up with the title as it sounds fairly familiar to me... but it is not in any of my Bradbury paperbacks I still have from my teen years.
