Storm Bay
I'm considering getting a Life of Fred for my second dd. She's finished SM 6 and is doing Russian Math as a transition between that and Algebra. Which of the ones that come before Algebra would be good choices? I was thinking about getting the fractions one. She knows all the rules, but sometimes, if we take a longish break from doing fractions, she's forgotten some of the rules. How simple is the book? Would I have to do the entire book with her? I do have a ds who could do this after her. I saw that it was listed under high school math in a homeschool catalogue, but some of the titles looked like they would be either remedial at that age or would work for younger students. She loves Geometry, but she'd need to have Algebra 1 first, right?
Mom22ns
We did the fractions book in about a month. It was all review and my ds was able to just go through it quickly. Like your dd, I wanted to make sure he had those concepts cemented before he moved on. It was a fun way to review. Decimals is taking a little longer, but will still be finished by the end of the school year. You could probably do them both over the summer if you wanted to. Laura Corin
He's doing five lessons a week - it's very quick at that rate. We are keeping it light because he's doing a lot of other review at the same time. He's really enjoying it. I expect to finish Fractions and do Decimals and Percents before we break for summer at the end of July. Laura
chai
I believe that both Fractions and Decimals will be review after Singapore 6. My dd did Fractions first and now Singapore 5 is almost all review. (She is taking less than 2 weeks to do a few other subjects not covered in LOF Fractions.) Much of LOF Decimals is covered in SM 6. These two LOF books are definitely not high school level. LOF can be done independently. My dd, who has never been an independent worker, completed LOF entirely by herself. The answers are in the book, so the student can check her work. (Since I thought LOF was a supplement, I didn't feel the need to look her work over. Truthfully, I was stunned when she proved to me that she knew everything in SM5 already.) The book is so unusual, that your dd might enjoy working through it even if it is review. If she passes the first "bridge" (quiz) at the end of a section, the book will tell her that she can skip the remaining problems and move on to the next section. Storm Bay
Thanks. I think I'll look into this for review and also for ds who is in SM 3 but not yet, necessarily. Although he does think fractions are a lot of fun so far.
