Sparrows-Song
Both my dc will need to have 2 years of Spanish in highschool. Ds is starting 8th grade and I need a Spanish course that will get him familiarized with Spanish, enough to learn to enjoy it and remember a bit for starting a "real" course in highschool. I'm looking for something totally student-directed that I can just check off and let that be it. He has had little-to-no Spanish exposure. Something DVD or computer-oriented would be great. (He would probably NOT follow through with a workbook/CD approach.) Thanks!!! :bigear:

AngieW in Texas
I'm using Tell Me More with my 13yo. It's free through Arlington Public Library. You don't even have to be a member there. http://www.pub-lib.ci.arlington.tx.us/research/tellmemore.aspx We tried out Rosetta Stone free through our local library last year, but it was awful. It was fine at first, but once it got to where it had pictures to go with sentences, my dd was completely lost and got very frustrated. She enjoys Tell Me More. The only problem comes when the speech recognition doesn't understand her. Today was a very bad day for speech recog. I always tell her to try it three times and then move on, whether it understands her or not. I'm using Tell Me More just for exposure. She'll continue to use it for 9th and 10th grades and then take it at the community college for credit.
mamaof2andtwins
I have been looking at the Tell Me More for quite a while now. I am thinking about using it with my 15 yo son, but my almost 13 yo dd would probably like it, too. Can you do two different languages or does it have to be one language for all the users? Maverick
This looks like it's for grades 3-6. Am I missing something? Do they have a high school level course? I'm not the original question-asker but my current 8th grader has decided he doesn't want to continue Greek next year and wants to do Spanish in high school. I need something for at least 2 years of high school credit. Editing: Sorry, I just reread the original question and see that she is asking for something to use before high school. They have good reputations for high school level Spanish. The OP asked for a Spanish program with dvd. I think Spanish for CHildren fits the bill at a low cost. Yes, it may be a bit young for middle school but I'm planning on using it for grade 7 because I know very little Spanish. SfC looks like it will give a good foundation in a gentle, inexpensive way before beginning high school level Spanish. Sparrows-Song
Thank you for all your suggestions! I took a long time to look over all of these, and finally decided that Spanish for Children would fit us better than anything else. I'd never even heard of that program, so thanks so much for sharing!!! :D
