LoveBaby Posted April 6, 2009 Share Posted April 6, 2009 Can anyone tell me more about Simply Language Arts, Phonics and Numbers from Shoelace books? Are they complete on their own or would they need to be supplemented? Are they consumable or can be re-used with more than one child? If you have used these in your home can you tell me how you implemented them and what you liked/didn't like about them? Spelling Wisdom - how are you using this in your home? Caroline4kids Posted April 6, 2009 Share Posted April 6, 2009 I have all the Simply books, but I bought them when they were not all together in one LA book. I have the Simply English and Poetry and they are very good. I am happier with queen's but may use SE again in the future. I use Queen's LL for my kids now, but continue with Simply Spelling. We use it on a daily basis. Two days for copy work one for dictation. Occasionally, generally once or twice a week, I have my eldest do a prepared dictation. He is in level C, my younger boys are in A and B. I wanted a workbook format which is why I switched to Queen's for the LA and also because she had full color picture study. I will buy the Spelling Wisdom down the road too. Since we do more than one lesson per week in Simply Spelling my kids will complete each of their levels fairly quickly. I have been wanting to get SW, but I can't justify it just yet. I used Simply Phonics with my last son and it was nice, but he wanted something more colorful. It is thorough though. Simply Numbers is ok, but we went to MUS and have stayed there. I like a workbook and SN was a copy-the-lesson kind of book. Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I don't use sticky notes like the author suggests, but we pretty much follow instructions for the rest of it. Our SW lessons look like: -I copy the page off and put it in dd's clipboard -she marks the words she thinks she'll have difficulty with and practices them -she copies the entire passage -when she thinks she's ready to do the entire passage correctly she labels a notebook page with "Spelling, lesson #whatever," her name and the date, then hands me the page that was copied from the SW book and tells me she's ready to dictate it -I read the lesson, a phrase or sentence at a time (gauging from difficulty, old English, or whatever I feel like doing at the time). She says that part back to me, I tell her she's correct, and she writes it. -When the writing is done she hands it to me right away. I correct any mistakes and hand it back, or congratulate her on a job well done. She does one lesson for at least two days in a row, if not three depending on difficulty. She can move faster than that, but her retention goes down. She knows that and will choose if she thinks a lesson needs three days. Every 5-10 lessons I'll run her through a review of lessons she's already passed. She enjoys doing spelling this way and says she never wants to go back to lists. Overall I'm quite pleased with her retention and learning. She's only ever used Spelling Wisdom, A Reason for Spelling, or me-created spelling. I've used Spelling Workout and a few others with her older brother though. SWO did not work out well for my oldest. Pun intended. It reduced spelling to a meaningless fill in the blanks workbook for him. His retention was low and he didn't like it at all. He uses R&S now, of his own accord. It's meant to be non-consumable, but I let her write in the book rather than copying all the problems. I had Simply Phonics but didn't like it. It doesn't teach by the endings of words (word families) like bat, cat, fat, rat...it teaches by word beginnings like bed, bat, bug, etc. - which I think is harder for kids to learn. Just my 2 cents.
