WTM Conference more accessible for some than others

Recommended Posts

I confess to green eyes of envy when I think of you North Americans who are able to attend the 10th Anniversary Conference in May. While those of us in New Zealand live in paradise, we don't exactly live near the centre of the home-educating world. I even looked up airfares after browsing through the seminar descriptions....but alas, attending is simply way out of reach for this antipodean (if not all!).

So I trust that those of you who have the privilege of attending thoroughly enjoy and appreciate the combined wisdom of the Wise/Bauer/Weiss'....not to mention the 'buzzy' atmosphere of what will be an excellent conference :)

You could always start home-ed conference in NZ and then invite SWB or JW to be your keynote speaker.

I'll admit to starting a home ed conference simply because I wanted to hear SWB speak... :tongue_smilie:

It worked and it was worth it and we're now in our fourth year.

I know you feel. I'm an American living in the UK, and I'd love to go to the conference in Williamsburg. I checked into flights, but there's no way I could justify that cost for a weekend.

Hope those of you who are going have a great time. We'll be thinking of you. Sigh. ;)

It's not just inaccessible for people outside of the country.

I'm in the middle of the The United States (Nebraska) and the conference is too far for us. It's close 1300 miles away. That means a 22 hour drive to get there. That's just *driving time*, no sleep, food, or gasoline stops. Add in gas costs, hotel stays, food - it's too much.

*sigh* Maybe someday.

And I'm thinking that those of us who are going should come back here afterwards and talk it up big time and share everything we learned there!! Would that be helpful?

I am expecting *detailed* notes, baby!

(And, praying that CD's and handouts will be available from Peace Hill Press afterward ;))

Have fun!!!! (sniff, sniff!)

I have been unable to attend a conference for the last two years due to economic circumstances . . . we live a two day drive away from any conference (or a very expensive flight). So living in North America doesn't mean easy access to any conference. I share in your envy.

Just wanted to add my 2 cents re: accessibility.

I signed up to go to the WTM conference and then started looking at flights. We have oodles of frequent flier miles so airline cost was not an issue. However to go from where I am in rural WA state to Williamsburg required 3 separate flights (one way) plus a one-hour drive after arriving. Repeat on the way home. Total travel time door-to-door was going to be nearly 14 hours each way....I just couldn't justify it for a 2-day conference.

But the West Coast...or even any major city further east, which would require 2 flights or less...that I would do!!

However, I understand the difficulties of putting on conferences. I'll just keep prayin' for the best!

I'm sorry you won't be able to go (I'm not either - way too far for me). I'm sure it'll be fantastic. I did get to hear SWB a couple of years ago at the conference here in CA, and it was great! Of course, it's a little hard for me to feel *too* sorry for someone who lives in NZ! That's my dream vacation spot :)

Aww.....

Now I'm sad.

We've been thinking about trying to do a West Coast conference next year...but still considering the details.

SWB

Meh, a West Coast conference next is just so . . . predictable.

Whereas a conference in New Orleans would be pure genius! It would be nostalgic for your mom; wouldn't that be nice?

Ah, well, I suppose I should be happy that I'm going to the Cincy conference.

I feel the same way about Legoland and the Playmobil place. :glare: Oh, and Hobby Lobby.

Well I am not going either, too far and I don't even have a passport so no crossing borders for me. I just wish that PHP shipped to Canadian customers so that if their is recordings afterwards I could buy them. Actually this just isn't my conference year in general, I can't go to the one I go to every year in my own province due to $$ concerns this month.

I am in California and have been considering going but I think it is just going to be too expensive. I did see her when she gave a two-day seminar a year and a half ago so I am very grateful for that. It gets lonely here with hardly anyone else who understands classical education. SWB could come to the conference in Sacramento but it's really more of an unschooling scene. I would really love to buy the audios of the seminars too if available.

You can order PHP stuff through some Canadian suppliers. I've special ordered some of the CDs through a company out west somewhere.....though I can't remember which one. Just google homeschool suppliers canada or something like that, and start calling the toll free numbers to see if they buy PHP supplies. That's how I found them. Oh, Tree of Life in NB does, I know.

Ohh that is good to know, I have a friend who gets PHP stuff for her store, but I didn't think of asking her to order in cd's for me if they have them. Thank you for the reminder.
